❖ Furniture designer can come from Architect or Interior Architect background.
❖ e.g Gerrit T. Rietveld, famous for Red & Blue Chair is actually an Architect
Tasks & Roles of a Furniture Designer
❖ Researching and planing various styles of furniture design
❖ Sketch out client’s ideas
❖ Work as a team to establish design concept
❖ Improve furniture that is already fabricated
❖ Select suitable material for furniture
❖ Meet & discuss their designs with their clients
❖ Use design software to create a complex & detailed design
❖ Communicate with craftsmen, marketing staff, production managers & design engineers
❖ Making & testing models by using computerised prototyping equipment.
❖ Making presentations to clients or senior design management
Tasks At Stages Of Construction
Idea
Core of entire process• The Design Brief
• General plan of overall project• Goals to achieve
Research
• Current market trends• Environmental considerations• Ergonomics• Anthropometrics• Gain insight on types & styles of furniture• Types of materials
Conceptual Development
Where the designer first meets with the client to define the client’s needs & expectations
• Project budget• Space allocation• Project functionality
Prototyping
• Build to scale model of actual product• Average 3 to 4 prototypes • Current technology using 3D printers• Using drafts of technical drawing• Carving using wood• Prototype has to be tested• Testing different types of material• Presenting to client

Design Documentation
Documentation of 3D file
• Technical drawing of product• 3D Rendered file such as AutoCAD• Essential set of documents as a piece of communication between the designer and the
manufacturer
Production Management
• Ensuring communication between manufacturer• Quality Control • Ensuring product is manufactured according to plan
Roles of Furniture Designer during
Pre-Construction During Construction Post-Construction
Pre-Construction
Private sub-contracting
Public tender against companies
During Construction
Manufacturing processFitting of actual furniture to site
Post-Construction
Filing completed product for future reference & research purpose
DESIGNING
Steps to take in designing
• Inspiration from nature
• Materials to be used
• Modelling
• Experimenting designs
Points to consider in Furniture Designing
• Budget
• Aesthetic
• Functionality
• Client’s requirement
Designs/Drawings involved in Furniture Designing
Conceptual Design
Technical Design
Conceptual Design
• In customer’s language
• Explaining the observable external characteristics
• Contains no technical information
• Describes the functions of the system
• Independent of implementation
• Linked to the required documents
Conceptual Designs of Furnitures
Presentation Drawing
• To show the concept design to clients• To highlight key components of the product• To give the client a better understanding of
the finished product

Schematic Drawings
• Research phase of the project• Requirements and restrictions are researched and addressed• Costs are then estimated.
Technical Design
❖ Describes the major hardware components and their functions
❖ Show organizations and functions of the software components
❖ Shows data structures and data flow
❖ Shows interfaces
