Meriadoc Brandybuck - Dominic Monaghan - visited the Katherine region last week to film for

his new TV series ‘Wild Things with DominicMonaghan’.

The actor became famous around the world ashobbit in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings

HOBBIT Meriadoc Brandybuckswapped the Shire for the stunningscenery of Katherine and its sur-rouds when Lord of the Rings starDominic Monaghan visited the re-gion.

Mr Monaghan - who is knowaround the world as Hobbit Merrywho travelled alongside Frodo Bag-gins and Pippin Took to Mordor in

Peter Jackon’s Lord of the Ring tril-ogy - stayed in Katherine for fournights shooting for his new TV series Wild Things with DominicMonaghan.

He was spotted filming in andaround Katherine, Pine Creek, Ade-laide River and Darwin.

KATHERINE’S Ibis Styles Hotelhas been awarded a Brolga award forBest Standard Accommodation in theNorthern Territory.

The annual Brolga awards are thehighest tourism accolades in the re-gion and Ibis front office reservationmanager Lisa Dawes said the Brolgarecognition for the Ibis Hotel wouldbe “great for the Katherine region”

“Competing against Darwin andthe Alice Springs, Katherine now has

the best standard accommodation inthe Northern Territory,” Ms Dawessaid.

But not only the hotel was recog-nised at the 27th Brolga TourismAwards.

Ms Dawes also took home aBrolga, winning the George DunneAward for Outstanding Contributionby an Individual.

This award recognises the extraor-dinary personal and professional

achievement and contribution by anyindividual over many years to theNorthern Territory tourism industry.

Ms Dawes, who has lived andworked in the Northern Territory forover 22 years, has called Katherinehome for the past 20 years and puts allher passion towards the Ibis Styleshotel, having worked at every role -from room attendant to relieving Gen-eral Manager.

Ms Dawes said that Katherine’s

strong showing in the Brolga awardswill mean extra business for the wholetown.

“Tourists will stay with us andspend their money in town,” MsDawes said.

The Ibis Styles will now representNorthern Territory in the Qantas Aus-tralian Tourism Awards held in Syd-ney on February 7.

Industry Development Officer forTourism NT, Susan Web, said that

through her hospitality work, charityinitiatives, sporting bodies, and vol-unteer work, Ms Dawes would em-body the strength and character of atrue Territorian and had been thestrongest candidate for the GeorgeDunne Award.

Minister for Tourism Matt Conlancongratulated all the winners and saidtheir outstanding efforts were helpingreturn visitor’s numbers to the North-ern Territory.
