Write a clear and complete critical reflection on your entire CAS EXPERIENCE, following
the same performance criteria as indicated on the activity/project self-evaluation form
CAS/AEF
CAS is a vital part of the IB diploma programme. IB is a very strong curriculum that
emphasis on Academics as well as extracurricular activities. Apart from the six
subjects, CAS makes IBDP a more joyful one. There were various activities which
were included in our school activity calendar so that we all get an opportunity to
learn through CAS activities.
For my creativity, I explored the art of dance. I joined the Shiamak Dawar‟s
Institute of Performing Arts in July 2008. This institute was started by the most
famous, one of the India‟s best choreographer Shiamak Dawar. It is one of the most
reputed dance institute‟s in India. They have 7 levels at which dance is taught-
beginner, elementary, elementary adv, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Intermediate
3 and intermediate adv. I reached the level of intermediate 3 by the end of my two
years CAS programme. At Shiamak Dawar‟s institute I learned various dance forms,
and explored areas of my strengths. I had worked collaboratively with my batch
mates and had put up various shows of the dance we had learnt. I learned about
group cohesion and leadership as I was made the group leader many times. This
helped me to learn about leadership and how effectively I can work in groups.
To further explore my creativity, I had put up a PowerPoint presentation on
Teacher‟s Day ‟08. I had gone personally to all the 110 teachers and clicked pictures
of everyone. After that I had selected a few of them and had compiled them and
put them up in a PowerPoint with various quotations. My presentation was
appreciated by all of the teachers and senior management team as they thought it
was very innovative and touching.
For my Action activities I had taken up the task of physical fitness. I had joined the
Gymnasium to improve my physical fitness, strength, endurance, cardio, and
flexibility. My instructor had defined a set of exercises for particular group of
muscles and component for me and kept pushing me to achieve my short term and
CANDIDATE NAME: XYZ CANDIDATE NO: 002279-000
Page 4 of 64
long term goals for lifelong fitness. I used to do cardiovascular exercises with
jogging, treadmill and cross trainer, strength training with freehand exercises,
dumbbells, weight training and set of isometrics, for flexibility he taught me yoga,
and PNF flexibility exercises. At first it was very tiring and I felt overload but by the
end of the activity I learnt how to keep myself fit and I am keen to continue the
activity throughout my life and ready to inspire more and more people. I had also
performed dance on the stage for various shows such as summer funk and winter
funk.
For my service activity I had joined an organisation names Sarthak Prayas. It is an
NGO working for the welfare of the society. They work in different felids such as
the education of underprivileged children, blood donation and cancer check-up,
old-age homes etc. I had volunteered to work with them in the schools of
underprivileged children and had helped them with the cancer check-up and blood
donation camps. This also helped me to get involved in an issue of global
importance.
It was a very different experience teaching at the school. I was given the students
below 5th grade. Through these children I was able to explore the different
perceptions people have about their lives. These children were underprivileged, but
their determination towards their goals made me re-think about my life and my
goals. Throughout the interaction these children were very friendly. Their positively
helped me gain more confidence in what I do and made me more determined to
put in more effort in my tasks.
I had also helped the people of Sarthak Prayas in organising blood donation camps
and cancer check-up camps. In blood donation camp I learnt to specify the blood
groups and came to about rare blood groups in humans such as A-, B-, O-, AB- or
other rare types. Through the blood donation camps I learned that there is still a lot
of goodness in the people and we all must donate blood regularly. Although they
were not gaining from anything, they were still very positive as they were helping
some unknown person. This helped me realise that we should do tasks in which we
have no selfish motive, but something that is of help to the society.
For my service activity, I had also taught dance to the students of 6th and 7
th graders
for Teacher‟s Day ‟08 and Teacher‟s Day ‟09. It was a wonderful experience as I
CANDIDATE NAME: XYZ CANDIDATE NO: 002279-000
Page 5 of 64
had to interact a lot with my juniors. I faced a lot of difficulty teaching the kids, and
that made me realise how difficult is teaching or choreographing to the kids. I was
able to explore my creativity through this activity. I choreographed medleys for
both the events. This included various songs of my choice and the choice of the
students. I interacted with them by taking their ideas and including them in the
performance. This not only made them more interested in the activity, but also
made them more confident on stage.
My entire CAS experience was very memorable and added to my personal
development. It is an amazing component of IB which not only helps us to de stress
ourselves from the stress of our exams, but also gave us a platform to perform,
learn leadership qualities, team cohesion and helped me explore various areas
which I would have not been able to explore with the inclination towards
academics.

concentrated on Bollywood Jazz. Throughout the session, we had various activities
where we had to dance with partners. This is how I interacted with others

I have very different sort of people in my batch. People who wanted to lose weight,
people who wanted to be more fir and people who basically wanted to learn dance.

About Shiamak Dawar‟s Institute of Performing
Arts
Dancing comes naturally to Shiamak, the sole reason
being while on stage he is at peace, awareness surrounds
him; „be the dance not the dancer‟, thus performance
simply mingles with the blood in his veins.
His personal interest in learning the art of dance,
professionally took him to Pineapple Dance Center and
Contemporary Dance Theatre, London and later to Paris
and New York.
His aim all though was to formalize the discipline of dance in India. Thus evolved
SDIPA…a tapestry woven with vivid colors each representing creativity and the zeal
to triumph has it‟s origin rooted in the year 1991 completing a decade in 2001 an era
full of smiles, sniffles and sobs. SDIPA has undergone the grit and grind of toil
evolving in to a discipline, professional and yet fun institute. It is a result of
Shiamak‟s affirmation and belief in the part of power, patience, perseverance and
positive thinking.
Shiamak does not choreograph dances, he creates masterpieces. The glory and
limelight is the culmination of his brilliance in choreography, which is well deserved.
Every song choreographed is a manifestation of creative intellect at its very summit.
„Sole to Soul‟- the motto to which Shiamak abides is an ever growing inspiration for
his troupe members for whom Shiamak is an omnipotent entity, their quench for
creative inspiration.
Shiamak has choreographed innumerable television commercials, movies, product
launches, music videos, stage shows, etc. Theatre held the roots to his future as a
choreographer. His various television ad campaigns helped him understand the
various aspects of choreography for videos.
That innovative aspect of Shiamak‟s choreography depicts every emotion predictable
in mankind. Positive energy incorporated with hard work results in choreographic
brilliance on stage or on screen, which he depicts through his multitalented dancers.
Managing sets, lights, the troupe and the dance choreography all at once is quite a
feat. And just like his grooves, he does the same with absolute ease
Pot full of colors, each color a beauty in itself. Ever noticed how different these
colors are? Yet they blend into the pot that beholds them as a whole. The Shiamak
Davar's Institute for the Performing Arts popularly known as “SDIPA” is symbolic of
that pot which beholds different human beings; who share but one goal in common,
which is the will to work hard and emerge as a rainbow of success.

SDIPA is India's leading dance institute with branches in all major cities. SDIPA
formalized in 1992 with only two centers in Mumbai. Today we have around 13
centers in Mumbai, 7 in Delhi, 4 in Bangalore, and this Summer we are holding
workshops in many other cities like Pune, Goa, Hyderabad etc. In Mumbai alone we
now teach thousands of students annually and the number is constantly increasing.
Jazz, Hip-hop, Afro-Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, Salsa, we've got a plethora of activities for
the young and the not so young. People come in all shapes and sizes to our dance
institute.
Fat, thin, good dancers, special people, physically & mentally challenged everyone is
welcomed to this disciplined, professional and yet fun institute. Some people come
to lose weight & enjoy dancing themselves thin. The program is designed to work
the parts of your body that need to build up strength & flexibility, gradually and
according to your body rhythm and temperament. It includes weight training and
diet programs. Everybody yearns to be fit and trim, to dance & express themselves.
At SDIPA students start classes from Beginners level, graduating to Elementary,
Elementary Advance, Intermediate. ATP (Advance Training Program) & J7 (Jazz 7)
are two special programs designed for students with that special talent. The latent
spark in them culminates into wild fire by the end of this program. Both, ATP & J7
are intensive training sessions where students are groomed into performers.
People who join SDIPA are influenced in a positive manner, dancing can change lives
and SDIPA imparts that message to all and sundry. 1

About Blood Donation
Blood donation is carried out when a person voluntarily agrees for blood to be
drawn with the intention of donating it. The donated blood may be used for
transfusions or it may be separated into individual components to be used as
required. The latter procedure is called fractionation.
Blood donation may be of different kinds. In the developed countries unpaid
donors give blood to replenish a community supply. In economically poorer
countries, however, blood donation is carried out according to demand, as the
established blood ties are extremely limited. It may be an altruistic act or it may
include a cash payment or incentives other than money. A person can have blood
drawn and stored for own future use.
In 1997, the World Health Organization (WHO) set a target for all blood donors to
be unpaid volunteers. But statistics, in 2006, revealed that only 49 of 124 countries
surveyed had achieved this target.
Typically, it is mandatory for potential donors to consent to blood donation. In the
case of minors, parental consent is required. In some countries the donors may enjoy
anonymity while in others it may be essential to know the ethnic background of the
donor because some blood types are more common among certain races while being
rare in others.
People who are potential donors are physically examined by a physician and their
medical history is also examined. They will also have their blood screened for
diseases that are easily transmitted through blood donations, such as viral hepatitis
and AIDS.
Blood donation is rather easy and safe for most people. Some may feel faint or feel
some pain when the blood is being drawn. The frequency with which blood can be
drawn is dependent on various factors and also the law of the land. It may in
general vary from days to month.
The amount of whole blood donated may vary between 300ml-500 ml (1 pint).
Collection may be carried out manually or by using automated equipments, the
latter helping to draw specific components from the blood. How often a donor can
donate varies from days to months based on which component of the blood they
are donating and the laws of the country where the donation takes place.
Blood components have a very short shelf life, therefore, acquiring a steady supply
or stock piling blood or any of its components is a perennial problem. To
circumvent this obstacle, scientist even tried their hand at transfusing blood from
other animals to humans but in vain. It appears that only the blood of one human
CANDIDATE NAME: XYZ CANDIDATE NO: 002279-000
Page 54 of 64
suit another. But there is more to that too as will be discussed in the coming
sections.
Globally, there are tragedies happening at magnanimous scale and the demand for
blood will escalate. After the September 11 tragedy the need to store blood was
discussed with great fervor and the need to keep stock of a steady supply was greatly
emphasized. According to 2008 estimates there was an annual collection of 81
million units of blood.
Donating blood is definitely an altruistic noble and noble gesture filling the donor
with happiness and contentment. It is an intensely humanitarian act which tides over
manmade barriers and one of the best ways to express our love and care for our
fellow beings.
