Hydraulic Turbine Flow Meters

Primary Markets

Hydraulic Applications –

• Agriculture• Automotive• Construction• Forestry• Manufacturing• Marine• Mining

• Turbine flow sensors for hydraulic fluids. • Multi-ported test stand meters with flow, pressure and

temperature sensors.• Portable hydraulic testers for on-site diagnostics and

troubleshooting of hydraulic machinery. • Flo-tech products are used in hydraulic testing and

analysis; and on equipment in a variety of industries, including: agriculture, automotive, construction, forestry, marine and mining

In-line hydraulic turbine flow sensors:• Simultaneous flow, pressure and temperature

measurement• Flow ranges up to 350 GPM (1,324 LPM)• Operating pressures to 5,800 psig (400 barg)• Operating temperatures to

300 °F (149 °C)• Accuracy ±1% of full scale

Portable hydraulic testers:• Simultaneous flow, pressure and temperature measurement• Digital display of flow rate, temperature; dial pressure gauge• Flow ranges up to 200 GPM (757 LPM)• Operating pressures to 6,000 psig (414 barg)• Operating temperatures to 300 °F (149 °C)• Optional bi-directional function; optional power measurement in

HP or kW• Accuracy ±1% of full scale

NEW: Internal burst disc• Now standard on all Flo-tech

portable testers• In event of over-

pressurization, no fluid will escape outside the meter

• Safer for the operator• More environmentally friendly

(no spills)

Basic System Installation

Test all system components - pump, motor, control valves, relief valves, cylinders - with only minor plumbing changes

Bi-directional Motor Testing

Check motor efficiency and test the DCV (directional control valve) with only minor plumbing changes

Cylinder Testing

Calculate force and verify extension times; measure extreme cylinder leakage

Hydrostatic Transmission Testing

Perform a pump performance test; and test the motor’s efficiency, without removing the Flo-Check.

Flo-Check USB Same Features as Testers, plus:• USB-powered: one cable is all there is• Adjustable High and Low alarms• Safety disc valve bypass (7,500 PSI ΔP)• Display values in real-time• Record data to a file (.csv)

pressure spike

• Records maximum, average and minimum pressures, 10,000x per sec• Captures and records system-damaging pressure spikes, up to 10,000 PSI

On-board data logging with Flo-Check USB; .csv file format

Quad Flow Sensor

Specifications:• Bi-directional measurement capability• ±1% full scale accuracy• Pressures up to 345 Bar (5,000 PSI)• Temperatures to 150 °C (300 °F)• Four flow ranges, two nominal port sizes:

4 - 56 LPM SAE 127.5 – 94 LPM SAE 1211.5 – 227 LPM SAE 1615 – 321 LPM SAE 16

Quad Flow Sensor - Operating Principle• Two magnetic pick-ups, positioned out of phase• “Quadrature” displays and counters detect the

leading or lagging phase of the turbine rotation– Time period between frequency pulses has a different

start/stop time (phase) depending upon forward or reverse flow

– Consider: clockwise motion from Pick-up #1 to Pick-up #2, compared with counter clockwise motion

Operating Principle (continued)• First pick-up is used to determine flow rate only

(both directions)• Second pick-up is used to determine phase:

– Voltages between pick-ups are compared– When peak voltage on pick-up #1, voltage level of

pick-up #2 will determine if the output signals are leading or lagging each other

– Phase calculation determines flow direction

Quad Flow Sensor Applications• Bi-directional flow measurement in any hydraulic

system• Monitor/Governor for hydraulic system:

– Bi-directional flow rate can be used to provide a “NET” total to the customer:positive flow - negative flow = NET flow

– NET total can provide data regarding other aspects of hydraulic system, for example cylinder travel

– Therefore, cylinder travel can be a parameter used to regulate other areas of the hydraulic system

Applications:• Fork lift speed regulation:

– Fork lift manufacturer uses Quad sensor to determine height of the forks. This information is used to limit the maximum operating forward speed of the truck (as forks go higher, maximum truck speed goes lower).

AccessoriesPressure Sensors w/4-20 mA Output• Pressure ranges from 0 to 15,000 PSI (1034 Bar) • Accurate readings to ±1% full scale• NEMA 4X enclosure rating• Easily installed in Flo-tech turbine meter body• Compatible with Flo-tech F6700/F6750 Series Displays
