TITCHFIELD PARKWe are very fortunate in Hucknall in that we have the beautiful Titchfield Park almost within the town centre. In 1914, the Duke of Portland gave 11 acres of land, then known as Caddaw Park, to the town of Hucknall. This was in honour of the coming of age of his son, the Marquis of Titchfield, after whom the Park is named.

The Hucknall Miners Welfare Committee gave a further 13 acres of land from funds raised to provide facilities for local miners. Originally, the park provided cricket, football, bowls, and tennis courts with trees and flowers planted around. Mr J W Bardill drew up the plans which included a bandstand, tearooms, a pavilion, shelters and a caretakers lodge.

Unfortunately, due to the start of the First World War, the start of the work was delayed and it was not until July 1922 when the opening ceremony was performed by the Marquis.

In recent times, many facilities have been improved as part of a comprehensive regeneration scheme. A range of major capital investments, including new sports pavilions, youth facilties and park fencing have combined to renew confidence in the park and restore its position at the centre of the community.

The park is used by a range of local sports clubs and Ashfield’s Annual Festival of Sport Gala is held here.

The park now includes a skatepark, playground, ball courts, basketball hoops, etc. New planting schemes have helped to brighten up the park and recently a lot of the bushes bordering the area have been removed to give a feeling of openness.

Another recent innovation has been the installation of a heritage trail around the park.

The cenotaph, designed by the Nottinghamshire Architect, T C Howitt, the designer of the Nottingham Council House, a memorial to Zachariah Green, and an original shelter have been restored thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and can still be seen in the Park.

There is also an active group of Friends of Titchfield Park and for the second year running, the park has been awarded a coveted Green Flag.
