Exam Preparation Guide / May 2012
Why take the exam?
Based on your current achievements, passing this test gives you one component toward either:
• HP Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE) – Server Solutions Architect V8 certification
HP ASE – Server Solutions Architect V8 certification This certification attests that you can:
• gather and analyze business and technical requirements and then plan and design enterprise-class
solutions based on HP Integrity and HP ProLiant Servers including the new HP ProLiant Generation 8
(Gen8) Server technologies and solutions
• use your knowledge of HP server line technologies, including HP BladeSystem, connectivity, high-
availability, integration, and management considerations for building comprehensive server solution
designs
• you can architect solutions that bring reliable intelligence to the core of a converged infrastructure,
optimizing application performance, proactively securing uptime and providing insight into every
aspect of an IT infrastructure
There are two paths to achieve this certification, as outlined below. The exams you must pass are dependent
upon which achievements you currently hold.
Path 1
This path is designed for networking professionals who have one of the following certifications:
APC – HP Integrity Servers
APC – HP ProLiant Server Solutions
If you meet these criteria, then passing the HP0-S36 alone gives you the certification. By completing this path,
you will also be granted the HP ASE – Server Solutions Architect V8 certification.
Path 2
If you do not meet the requirements for path 1, then you must complete this path, which is designed for new
candidates. First, you must achieve the prerequisite exam, HP0-D13, Technical Introduction to the HP Enterprise
Portfolio. Second, you must pass the following exam:
• Architecting HP Server Solutions (HP0-S36)
Table 1 summarizes the requirements for both paths.

Who should take this exam? All candidates for HP ASE – Server Solutions Architect V8 certification must take the Architecting HP Server
Solutions (HP0-S36) exam.
Although anyone can take the exam, most successful candidates have one year experience designing and
planning HP ProLiant Server or HP Integrity Server solutions. It is also expected that you will have industry-
standard server technology knowledge from training, hands-on experience or participation in other technical
events. This guide describes some of these ways and provides references to materials for further preparation.
NOTE
Although anyone can take the exam, passing it helps you to achieve certification only if you have one of the
achievements listed in Table 1.
If you are a new candidate and want to earn the HP ASE – Server Solutions Architect V8 certification, you
need to complete the prerequisite exam, HP0-D13, Technical Introduction to the HP Enterprise Portfolio, first.
How to study for the exam The Architecting HP Server Solutions (HP0-S36) exam tests you on topics that are covered in an HP instructor-
led training (ILT) courses (4 days total). This training is recommended for all candidates no matter what their
current achievements.
While it is recommended that you complete this training, the training is neither required nor does it guarantee
that you will pass the exam. It is expected that you will study on your own and draw on your real-world
experience. Also remember that the exam tests you on design concepts, which are covered in a document-
based course and not at the ILTs.
Read the sections below to assess your options. Even if you do not intend to complete the recommended ILTs
and document-based course, you should examine the topics that are listed for them in the sections below; the
exam will test you on your mastery of these topics.
Attend recommended ILTs ILT to help to prepare you for this exam:

You are highly encouraged to attend this course, particularly because it offers content on the HP ProLiant Gen8
servers with over 150 new design innovations, including the HP ProActive Insight systems architecture which
comprises powerful hardware and software that delivers server life cycle automation, while at the same time
providing continuous intelligence on server health, power usage and other important diagnostics. HP ProLiant
Gen8 with the built-in HP ProActive Insight architecture addresses the top concerns of enterprises via intelligent
technologies that automate tasks and significantly improve uptime. Register for these courses in The Learning
Center of your HP Partner Portal, which is the HP Learning Management System for HP customers and partners.
You will require an HP Learner ID to register for a class. Please obtain this ID and then register for classes at
least one week in advance. Costs and scheduling vary according to region.
This course is designed for account-aligned presales technical specialists who design and justify HP cross-
portfolio solutions to customers. Learners attending this course will gain knowledge of business requirements,

Four-day instructor-led, lab and classroom activities.
Purchase self-study materials Rather than attend the ILTs, you can purchase self-study materials. Typically, materials consist of the Learner’s
Guide provided to the ILT participants, which you can read and study at your own pace. Note that these
materials were designed for use in a participative ILT. Therefore, you will see discussion questions and
activities, which you can use to practice and assess your progress. Answers are provided in an appendix at
the end of the guide.
For some courses, you might also be able to purchase a Lab Guide.
Note, however, that because the training for this exam features an even higher than normal ratio of lab
activities versus lecture, the self-study materials might not give you enough information and hands-on
experience. Most successful candidates have experience troubleshooting HP products as well as deploying
Cisco and HP products in a heterogeneous environment.
To purchase the self-study materials associated with the ILTs described above, visit
http://learningpartnerconnection.com/coursemanuals.
Obtain hands-on experience All HP exams are designed for server solution design professionals with on-the-job experience, but this exam, in
particular, requires such experience.
How to take the Architecting HP Server Solutions (HP0-S36) exam Table 2 provides details about the exam. Note that this is a proctored exam, which you must complete at a
scheduled time and authorized location. You will not be allowed to take any reference materials with you.

Tips for taking HP exams ExpertONE exams will be presented in blocks. You can move from question to question within the block,
and/or skip questions and/or change your answers. However, once you submit your answers for each block,
you cannot return to a previous block to review these questions or change your answers.
Rather than emphasize simple memorization, HP exams attempt to assess whether you have the knowledge
and skills that an IT professional requires on the job. Therefore, test items may present a scenario, which
outlines a particular network environment or problem. Some test items also include exhibits, which might show:
• Network diagram for cable connections to interconnect module
• Enclosure rack placement and configuration
• Screenshot showing the results of executing a command
• SIM Web browser interface screenshot
You will need to use the exhibit to complete the test item successfully. The test may include:
• Multiple choice questions that have a single correct answer
• Multiple response questions that have two or more correct answer
• Pull-down or matching items
• Point-and-click questions that require you to click on the correct answer
Before you answer a question, take the time to read the entire question and all of the options carefully. If the
question indicates that it features an exhibit, study the exhibit and reread the question. Make sure to select the
answer that correctly responds to the question that is asked — not simply an answer that includes some correct
information.
If the question asks for more than one answer, remember to select each correct answer. You do not receive
partial credit for a partially correct answer.
