I thought Id post my solution and see what I may have missed
1. 16 + 2 squares as shown in the 1st pic.2. 4 corner squares as shown in the 2nd3. 4 edge squares as shown in the 3rd4. 1 centre square as in the 4th5. 4 larger corner squares as in the 5th6. 8 smaller squares as in the 6th7. The largest square that encompasses all the othersQuick addition 16 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 1 + 4 + 8 + 1 = 40
