When is it the best time to hear my child read?

How long should I spend listening to my child

read?

Establish a reading time, even if it is only ten minutes a day.

My child has a few favourite books which he/she enjoys hearing over

and over again. I feel we should be moving on. What should I do?

• Ask your child to bring a library book home to read to a younger sibling.

• Make a book (family pictures)

At home my child reads nothing but comics and magazines.

Does this matter? How can I encourage my child to

read ‘better’ books?

Provide a variety of reading materials

some for reading enjoyment

some for reading knowledge with information about

hobbies and interests.

What if my child chooses a book which is too easy for

him?

Encourage activities that require reading

Constructing a kite (reading directions) Cooking (reading a recipe)

DIY (reading instructions to buildflat pack furniture) Using reference books to:- Identify interesting bird's nestInvestigate shells collected at the beach

My child sometimes brings home books which are far too difficult to read without

help

What should I do when my child doesn’t want to

read?

Encourage your child in all reading efforts.

What should I do if my child gets stuck on a word?

When my child reads aloud, I notice that he/she leaves out some words.

Does this matter?

My child reads without expression – how can I

help?
