SUGGESTED CUTTING LAYOUT FOR THE SKIRT

fold fabric in half, with selvedge to selvedge for this layout

ABOUT THIS STYLE

This skirt is an eight-gore, elastic waist pull-on style

with arelaxed fit & flare silhouette.

Oh yes, as always, make & fit a muslin before

you cut into your fabric...in this case, use a

cheap fabric with a similar drape to your chosen fabric.

SEAM ALLOWANCES & OTHER INFO

Seam allowances are 3/8" or 1cm wide;

all seams are sewn right sides together

unless otherwise stated.

The waist of the short is finished with a separate

elastic casing; the bottom edges of the shorts & the

sarong overlay are finished with a narrrow hem.

Skills needed include: making & applying an elastic waist

casing; working a narrow hem.

FABRIC & NOTIONS REQUIRED

All sizes need around 2 3/4 yards/ 250 cm of 60"/150cm

wide fabric for this sarong-shorts. You'll also need enough

1/2" or 1.25 cm wide elastic to circle your waist.

Start by preparing the sarong overlay...

join the sarong fronts to the sarong back

along the side seams, then press the seams open.

1a

+ +

1bHem the sarong...start at the top edges, at the side seam (you'll leave

the top edge along the back unhemmed, because that's where you'll

attach the sarong to the shorts) and press the cut edges under a scant

1/8" or 3mm, then press this folded edge under another 1/4" or 7mm.

Work along the top edges of the fronts, the angled edges of the tie,

the front edges of the sarong wrap and along the bottom edges of the sarong.

Time to prepare the elastic casing & complete the sarong-shorts.

Join the elastic casing strip at the short ends to create a long loop.

Press the short seam open, then fold in half lengthways and press

along the foldline (that's the dashed line marked on the pattern).

2cHem the shorts legs...use the same method you used to hem

the sarong overlay in step 1b. Press flat.

Prepare the shorts...join the shorts fronts along the center front seams;

join the shorts backs along the center back seams.

*please note* you will probably wish to tape theese crotch seams

as you stitch...this will stop them from distorting. Press all these seams open.

2a

+

+

Join the shorts fronts to the shorts back along the side seams;

then along the inside leg seams. Press the seams open.

2b

+

+

Baste the sarong onto the back waist edge

of the shorts.

3

+

4a

+

4b

Matching the seam of the elastic casing to the center back seam

of the shorts, and sewing through all thicknesses, join the bottom edges

of the elastic casing to the waist edge of the sarong-shorts.

Make sure that you leave the front of the sarong and the ties free

from this seam, or you won't be able to tie it!

Leave an opening along this waist seam, about 2" or 5cm long.

Now try on your gorgeous new sarong-short,

and knot the tie at the front ...

don't you look fabulous?

+

Cut your elastic so it measures the same as your waist.

Push a large safety pin through the elastic, then use this

to thread the elastic through the waist channel.

With the elastic ends through, join the ends, then close up

the 2" or 5cm opening along the waist casing stitchline.
