Hornwort
Biology Iaguilar.chua.cortez.
Kingdom: Plantae
Division: Anthocerotophyta
Class: Anthocerotopsida
Order: Anthocerotales
404
Also known as Non-Vascular plants Terrestrial with some aquatic forms Very small Photosynthetic Lack specialized cells for the transport of
materials
Bryophytes
<- Moss
Liverwort ->
Spaces between cells filled with mucilage – Distinguishing characteristic.
Single, large chloroplast – Photosynthesis (chl a, b, carotenoids, xanthophylls).
Rhizoids – Hairlike structure; for anchorage. Stomata – Exchange gases between plant
and air.
Structure of Hornwort
Damp and humid places. Rocky environment. Forests, fields, ponds, streams and
riverbanks. Tree trunks.
Habitat
Asexual or vegetative. Sexual.
Male – Antheridium; Female – Archegonium Both are embedded in the thallus. Antherida breaks down. Sperm are chemically attracted to eggs. Zygotes are scattered over the plant. Grow into the next generation of sporophytes. As they mature, they split into two halves lengthwise and
release spores. Hornwort germinates directly from the spores. Produce a flat thalloid plant with greasy blue-green color,
which is the next generation of gametophyte.
Reproduction
Aquarium plants (filter; absorbs chemicals). Nitrogen fixation. Astringent.
