Number of Automated Devices

Most Homes Include Some Automated Devices

• Thermostat• Sprinkler Clock• Alarm System• Light Timer

These devices are standalone and only represent part of a fully automated and integrated system.

These Automation Devices Are Adequate for Some But…

• All configure and operate differently• Have no central interface, not integrated• Offer no remote access• Do not annunciate events and alarms online• Lack historical data recording ability• Are not scalable, added functionality not

possible• Are not as robust as industrial devices• Only represent a part of automatable systems

Automatable Systems

• HVAC Heating Ventilation Air-Conditioning• Security alarm• Video surveillance• Utility monitoring (gas, electricity, water)• Lighting• Sprinklers• Window and door coverings• Audio and video systems (low priority)

My Decision to Automate

The complexity of my zoned radiant heat system alone justified the use of a PLC and HMI for monitoring and control.

•Seven temperature sensors

•Twelve zone valves

•Four circulation pumps
