THE RELOCATION OF HOLY SPIRIT UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC SEMINARY
When the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies announced several years ago its plan to relo-cate to the University of Saint Michael College in the University of Toronto, the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops of Canada, who constitute the Seminary Board of Directors, began a process of discernment, together with the Seminary Rector, regarding the implications for the Seminary.
The first question centered on the academic formation of our seminarians which until recently had been ensured through the theology programs at Ottawa's Saint Paul University and the Eastern theological programs provided by the Sheptytsky Insti-tute affiliated with St. Paul University. Enquiries were made regarding the Sheptytsky Institute's new academic arrangements with St. Michael's College in Toronto. Information was also received regarding programs offered at Ottawa's St. Paul Univer-sity, now without the participation of the Sheptytsky Institute. Discussions were also held with other academic centers, includ-ing those available at several institutions in Edmonton AB.
The second question centered on a physical home for the Seminary. The present building in Ottawa could still be used if the Seminary remained in Ottawa, but as an older building it has been subject to ever increasing repairs over the years. Much time was spent visiting possible locations in the Toronto area. There the difficulty was finding a building suitable for the Seminary needs, within a reasonable travel distance to St. Michael's College and at a feasible price. The cost was clearly of concern even when considering the sale of the Ottawa location.
A third option arose when the Basilian Fathers vacated their House of Studies in Edmonton, with the possibility of a lease or purchase agreement with the Seminary.
Invoking the divine help of the Holy Spirit, the patron of the Seminary, the bishops conducted much prayer and reflection in order to come to a decision, fully aware of the stages of formation of the present seminarians and the good will of many organi-zations and individuals desirous for the best outcome for the Seminary. The bishops have also been sensitive to the concerns of the faithful of each eparchy who provide the funding essential to the running and maintenance of the Seminary, notwithstand-ing the decline in parish memberships and slow depletion of available finances.
With all this in mind, the bishops, as the Seminary Board of Directors, have decided to enter into a lease agreement with the Basilian Fathers (Order of St. Basil the Great) for their House of Studies in Edmonton AB, which will provide space suitable for the Seminary, including chapel, kitchen and dining room, library and study rooms, and rooms for the seminarians and staff. Seminarians will pursue a Master of Divinity program at Newman Theological College.
In addition, internet and online educational opportunities are also available to our seminarians, in particular with the Sheptytsky Institute, providing ever increasing dimensions to seminary formation.
In Sacred Scripture, we find various examples of journeys undertaken by the people of God in response to the call of the Lord, be it Abraham and Moses in the Old Testament, or the Holy Family in the New Testament. So too, Holy Spirit Seminary will now undertake a new direction in its pilgrim journey as a sacred institution, which we discern to be the call of the Lord not only to the staff and seminarians, but also to the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada. And so, with the prayer from the Divine Liturgy we pray: "Let us go forth in peace. In the name of the Lord!"
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Myrrh-Bearing Women Angels announced to the myrrh-bearing women: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen”. The Resurrection from the dead is the victory over bodily corruption: “Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him”. In the Resurrection, the body of Christ is new and glorified, free from earthly limitations of time and space. Precisely because of this, the Resurrection of Christ is the revelation of God’s new creation. On Sunday, the first day after the Sabbath, the Church celebrates the Resurrection of Christ as the first day of the new creation. The Resurrection of Christ is the guarantee of our own resurrection: “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ”. The faith of the Church is entirely based on the Resurrection of Christ: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” “For since we believed that Jesus died and rose again, even so through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.” (Christ Our Pascha-232

Why do we stand, and not kneel, from Easter to
Pentecost?
In the tradition of the Ukrainian
Catholic Church, we do not kneel
from Easter to Pentecost. Despite the
fact that other churches do it or
“visitors…are surprised” does not
change the fact that kneeling is not
proper during this time. In the
Ukrainian Catholic Tradition, the
action of kneeling and prostrating is a
penitential posture. It is the position of
a sinner seeking forgiveness. It is NOT
a position of adoration (as it is in the
West). This is why it is practiced so
often in the Lenten season. Standing is
the proper position for giving praise
and thanks to God in the spirit of joy
and happiness. During the Paschal
Season (Easter to Pentecost), the time
for repentance, and fasting, is over. It
is the time of our salvation for “Christ
is Risen!” We express our joy,
thanksgiving and adoration for this fact
and the fact that we who have “…been
baptized into Christ and put on Christ”
have also risen with Him. It is for this
reason that kneeling is improper during
this holy season. The Ukrainian
Catholic Church acknowledges the
Resurrection of Christ by standing
rather than kneeling during the
Consecration. We are demonstrating,
in a bodily way, that you believe that
“Christ is risen from the dead, and
by death He has trampled death
and to those in the graves He has
granted life.”

At the end of the Divine Liturgy on St. Thomas Sunday the faithful are anointed with blessed oil (Myrovania) followed by the distribution of Artos.
