• Signs and markings plays an important role in conveying messages to the road users.
• To be effective signs and markings should be: • Simple and clear• Attract attention of road users• Large enough to see, understand, and react

1.Regulatory Signs: for traffic laws and regulations•Examples: speeds, right-of-way, turn signs, one-way signs, pedestrian signs.

PAVEMENT MARKING
Lines, patterns, symbols, words, colors on surface of pavement for regulating, warning, or guiding traffic.
Must draw attention of road users.
Must be visible at night.

TYPES OF PAVEMENT MARKING
1. Longitudinal: Parallel to roadway• White: separates of opposing traffic• Yellow: right edge of pavement• Broken lines: permissive• Solid lines: restrictive• Double lines: maximum restriction
2. Transverse: Across travel lanes• Stop line: solid white lines• Crosswalks: many indications (refer to MUTCD)• Parking lanes
3. Word/Symbol on surface of pavement for regulating, warning, or guiding traffic.
