Heybridge U3A
News Sheet No. 2012/6
June 2012 Contacts: Peter Thorpe Chairman 01621 850828

From the Chairman
It seems impossible that these notes are for the June News
Sheet. I am still waiting for spring and now it is summer! I
expect that many of you will be visiting places and enjoying
the “out-doors” with your groups. The U3A is a great way
to enjoy organised events with like minded friends.
I announced at the last meeting that Joyce Woodham, our
Vice Chairman and Programme Secretary, has been
elected as Chairman of the Association of Essex U3As.
This is a great honour for Joyce and for our U3A and I hope
that we will support the work of the Association with a
strong team at the Quiz on June 12th. Heybridge won the
quiz last year and the word on the street is that the other
Essex U3As are in training and I quote: “to try to topple
Heybridge”! We are also looking forward to the Study Day
in October which will be held at the Plume School, Maldon.
We have two members of our U3A on the committee
organising this special new Essex event and I hope that our
U3A will give it our full support.
We try to arrange a wide range of topics for our monthly
meetings and at our last meeting, we learned about the
wonderful work of the Essex Air Ambulance service. When
someone phones 999, they expect emergency help fast. If
the emergency is very serious and requires an Air
Ambulance, the call is sent to a charity! The Air Ambulance
is not run by the NHS or the Police – the entire cost of
providing: the helicopter; the pilot; the fuel; the qualified
doctor; the paramedics: the special medical equipment; the
drugs etc. are paid for by charity. There is no funding from
government and it costs £250,000 per month to operate
one helicopter!
When asked
whether this was
“fair”, our speaker,
Tony Chappel, said
that they preferred it
that way. He said
that people are very
generous towards
the Air Ambulance
(and the similar
charity, the RNLI)
and that by being a
charity, it gave them
complete
independence from
official interference!
Tony Chappel: Author: Peter Thorpe.
Members showed considerable interest and asked many
questions. Tony was a relaxed and amusing speaker and
quickly made us realise that this is a special “worthy cause”
and one which I hope, none of us will ever need to call.
I look forward to being with you all again at our next
meeting on Friday June 8th.
Email thorpe101@btinternet.com or phone 01621 850828.
Peter Thorpe.
From the Editor
The Diary on the last page has been updated to the end of
July 2012. It is important that you, as COG’s, members of
Groups or just members of Heybridge U3A, keep me up to
date. If anyone has an interesting story, relevant pictures
or anything that relates to The Heybridge U3A or the U3A
movement as a whole, then please contact me with the
information so that it can be included in the News Sheet.
This month’s Monthly Meeting is as early as it can be in the
month, which some of us did not realize, and their
contributions have been a few days late. This has been
exacerbated as I have been on the Coastal & Marine’s
Barge Trip on my busiest day (Wednesday before
publication) when all text should have been inserted, the
photographs inserted, sized etc. and the draft sent to my
checker and the Committee. My excuse can be seen in
the picture below. We were all at sea.

From the COGCo (Group Co-ordinator)
Since my last article I have been living it up! Wine tasting
at Langford, a Sunday roast dinner, an Indian meal at
Zara’s (previously the Royal Oak) at Woodham Mortimer
and coffee at a new location, the Loft at Tollesbury. This
sounds as if I spend most of my time socialising, but I do
attend the Computer Group, Beginners’ Italian and
Scrabble where I exercise my brain. I have recently played
three frames of Ten Pin Bowling which was great fun.
Several people have spoken to me about the Study Day
and are looking forward to receiving application forms.
I then took myself off to Italy for 10 days and returned just
in time to send this article to Ian.

Bird Watching Group
Our May outing was to Two Tree Island near old Leigh. We
met up with the Mark, the warden, who had agreed to show
us around the site. It not just birds, visitors go to see, but
rare butterflies. Its’ just a peaceful place to be. We wanted
to visit at this time of the year to see the young Avocet
chicks and we were in luck. It was wonderful to watch them
scurrying around in the mud going through the same
actions as their parents. Mark, and the volunteers, do a
head count and it is not easy as they do not stay still for
long. There were twelve chicks counted while we were
there, but not all will survive to adulthood. Last year only
three survived.
There were lots of Black Headed Gulls - very noisy birds. I
hope you like the picture of mum and baby. There were so
many birds to watch from the hide. We spent most of our
time there so the list is long: Common Tern, Ringed Plover
Godwits (Black tailed and Bar ailed), Dunlin, Knot, Mallard,
Shelduck and Canada Geese. It was quite a walk back to
the car park, and on the way, we could hear the birds
singing all around us but only saw the Whitethroat, Pied
Wagtail and a Swift.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time on Two Tree Island and
plan to visit again in the autumn.
Our next meeting is on 22nd June when we plan to visit
Abberton Reserve.

Computer Group
A smaller group than usual attended our May meeting when
the main object was to prepare a piece about us for
inclusion in the Heybridge U3A website. It was an
interesting session leading to more introspection than
normal. What, we asked, were our aims, our methods and
the ground we wished to cover? Eventually a ‘mission
statement’ emerged and is now on the website.
Once again, this May session demonstrated how
computers can be ‘all things to all people’, an Aladdin’s
Cave, where you can choose between word processing,
photography, emailing, graphics, internet shopping,
spreadsheets, second-hand buying and selling,
conversations across the World by videophone, research
into anything under the sun or just for pure entertainment.
We all learn from each other in the group and for some (like
myself) the learning curve is pretty steep, but well worth it.

Coastal and Marine Group
For all of us who are booked on the barge trip, we need to
be on board by 06.45. So quite an early start. Let us hope
for good sailing weather and an enjoyable day. A day
without rain would be a bonus!!!
Our next outing is a visit to the historic Dockyard at
Chatham on Wednesday 13th June. Wednesday was
chosen to (hopefully) avoid the weekend traffic at the
Dartford Crossing. There is plenty to see, with three
historic ships, and you can always walk off your lunch with
the quarter of a mile ropewalk in the rope shed. If you are
interested, please contact John Harrison on 01621 854851,
for more details of car share etc.

Discussion Coffee Morning Group
This month six of us enjoyed a lighthearted get together
and hospitality was provided by Jean. The next coffee
morning will be at 11.00 on Friday 15th June at Margaret
Clark’s house. Details will be provided as usual at the next
meeting. If anyone is interested in joining us or would like a
bit more information please give me a call.

Family History Group
There were only four members at our May meeting due to
holidays but that did not dampen our enthusiasm. Kay
from the Blackwater Family History joined us and we had a
real fact finding meeting. She showed us the mailing lists
on Rootsweb, the Freereg site and how easy it is to use
Page 4 of 8
Google for information. It always amazes me how many
website are available on the internet for family history.
You just need to know which button to press! She will
come and join us again. Our next meeting will be 28th June
at my house l0.30 to 12.30. Please phone if you need
information about the group or directions.

French Conversation Group
There was a slightly different end to our conversation this
month. We were talking about our efforts to watch French
television (TV francaise) in French. One of our members
has Sky and had found some French on channel 799, but I
was only told “channel unavailable” on my set, so it must be
contract dependable. Interesting as the BBC’s ‘Ma France’
is, it is not current affairs, so I decided to explore further.
After some false starts, I realised that to avoid French
programmes in English it was necessary to ask for them in
French, which is common sense when you think about how
a computer works. The website which I found (approved of
by my security) was called Webmaster-Gratuit, it brings up
a series of logos and you “double click” on the one that you
fancy watching. Please can anybody who has also
experimented on finding TV programmes in foreign
languages (possibly from the Italian group) let me know
how successful they were.
Good Luck/ Bonne Chance.
We meet regularly at 10.00 on the second Wednesday of
the month.

Italian Conversation
The Beginner's Italian Conversation Group met at Gill's on
the 7th May. Firstly, we went through some of the work the
various members had been doing since the previous
meeting. We practiced how to say various phrases that
might prove useful if we were to visit Italy. This time,
instead of a crossword puzzle, we had a list of past
participles, the idea being to match the English words to the
correct Italian ones. It is not always as easy as it sounds,
but it is fun to work through, and good revision. We also
read a little story, written in the present tense, using mainly
familiar words, with the introduction of a few new ones. As
'homework' each of us is to write a little follow-on to the
story.
In order to avoid clashing with the Jubilee celebrations, the
next meeting will actually be on Wednesday 30th May. After
that, all being well, the meetings will return to the more
normal slot of the 1st Monday in the month.
The Advanced Italian Conversation Group met on 21st May
at Sue's. We started the meeting by each of us saying
something in Italian. In one case, this was an interesting
account of a holiday to Australia taken since the previous
meeting. Those of us who had not been fortunate enough
to be away on holiday either read something we had
previously written or read an amusing piece selected from a
book. We then set about tackling an Italian article on the
historical origins of ice cream. We each read a paragraph
out and then we tried to translate it, managing rather well,
without having to resort to the dictionary.
The next meeting will be on the 25th June (4th Monday)
again at Sue's.

Local History Group (LHG)
We next meet on Tuesday 19th June for a visit to Hollytrees
museum and possibly, numbers and time permitting,
Colchester Castle museum. If you are interested in
coming, please let me know by the next Monthly Meeting
on the 8th June.
In July we shall be doing a guided walk around the ancient
hamlet of Beeleigh. Please can I have names and payment
(£3 pp) at the June Monthly
Meeting. I shall also then be
collecting names for our visit to
Layer Marney tower in
September.

We really enjoyed our trip to
the Essex Police Museum.
Some of us were caught on
camera 'impersonating a police
officer'. We were also treated to a guided visit to the main
Page 5 of 8
control centre where the 999 police calls are dealt with.
Our guides then took us to see the old parts of the police
headquarters, from the days when the chief constable and
his family used to live 'on the job'.

Luncheon Group
The Bell at Purleigh was the venue for our monthly lunch on
Friday 25th May. There were twelve of us seated at two
tables, which made the conversation between the tables
much easier. The extensive menu included a large
specials menu, vegetarian choices and several puddings.
Once ordered, the starters and then mains came out quite
promptly. However, they perhaps should have taken longer
as one meal that was served under cooked. (A discount on
the bill helped offset the under cooking so I'm told.) We
ordered desserts and coffees. The coffees arrived some
15-20 minutes before the desserts which seemed a bit
strange. However, we all enjoyed our meal and the lively
conversation. Our next lunch will be on 22nd June in The
Chequers pub in Goldhanger at the normal time of 13.00.
Looking forward to seeing familiar and possibly some new
faces then.

Petanque Group
We now have the sort of weather that makes playing
"boules" extra enjoyable and it was very pleasant on the
Promenade last Monday. We now have an extra Monday
Bank Holiday with the Diamond Jubilee so, remember, no
game on the 4th June. For our summer Petanque/Raclet
meeting we have chosen Monday June 25th and we shall
be playing in the Basin followed by a Raclet meal. Normal
start time. If it is raining that day we shall be there on July
2nd instead of June 25
th. This is for the regular players, just
a little summer celebration. Please let me know if you will
be there to make catering for the numbers easier.
Otherwise, see you on our regular Monday afternoon
sessions.

Photography Group
At the previous meeting we were discussing the way that
our cameras captured images. We started our May
meeting with a discussion on how we could take control of
our pictures by switching off the “auto” setting and using
some of the manual controls to get a different effect. The
assignment for this meeting was to take two photos, one in
“auto” and another of the same subject in “manual”. The
resulting shots were very interesting and the members used
a variety of adjustments, including: focus; shutter; aperture
and sensitivity to change the “auto” shot. It was evident,
that by using “auto”, the photographer would get a clear
and sharp shot, but for an “arty” effect. Creatively, using
blur for emphasis of the subject, or to introduce an
appearance of movement, then manual control was the way
to go.
We are not having a specific photographic assignment in
June. It was decided that we would look at the way that
composition can improve the appeal of a picture, whether
photographed, painted or drawn.

Reading and Books Group
The book this month was the ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’.
A very popular part one, of a trilogy of books, written by Stig
Larson. Many or even all of us had read the book before
but none minded reading it again.
It is a complex story about three individuals. Henrick
Vanger, head of a dynasty, tormented by the loss of a child
decades ago. He employs Mickeal Blomvist, a
controversial journalist, to find out what happened to this
child. He, in his turn, seeks the help of Lizabeth Sander, a
young enigmatic, delinquent and dangerous security
specialist. She is a genius computer hacker who does not
tolerate restrictions upon her by individuals, society, or the
law.
This story without doubt is a thriller and dazzling novel.
This book is to be recommended to the now ’few’ who have
not yet read it.
During May, eight of our group joined other members of the
19 book groups from the Maldon area for a get-together in
Purleigh. There we exchanged books, information about
books and how they are run their various groups.
Local Librarians joined us by giving us useful information
about the library's facilities in relation to book groups.
Interestingly we have 400 book groups in Essex, the
highest number in the UK.
I also attended a book group discussion at the Essex U3A
AGM and was pleased to see that we seem to be getting
things right in Heybridge.

Scrabble Group
We had nine players at our May Scrabble afternoon which
opened with Elizabeth getting a seven letter word on her
first turn, coming up with DIARIES for a score of 8, doubled
to 16 as the opening word of the game, plus 50 points for
the seven letter word - a total of 66. Her delight was short
lived when she picked her next seven letters and got L, L,
L, L, U, U and a blank!!!
We managed to get in two games on each of three boards,
plus the mandatory cuppa and biscuits.
Joyce Rutter, our new member from last month, came
again, so we must be doing something right. If anyone else
would like to join us next month we meet on Tuesday 26th
June, soon after 13.30.

Technical Computing Group
The last meeting of the Technical Computer group took
place on Thursday the 10th of May at Peter's house.
Further discussions took place regarding the Heybridge
U3A Web Site and the ways it could be further improved.
Peter was able to display via a digital projector and screen
so those present could follow the improvements.
Discussions took place about the layout of our own page
but, at the end of the meeting, no firm layout had been
confirmed. This will be one of the subjects for our next
meeting. It was interesting to see that, at the time of our
meeting, three groups have provided details about their
groups for inclusion. These included Creative Writing,
Family History, and the Photographic Groups. Thank you
to these Cogs for supplying the information. The next
meeting takes place on Thursday the 14th of June. Our
thanks to Ann and Peter for their hospitality.

Ten Pin Bowling
Twelve players, three lanes, two hours of play. That was
the recipe for an afternoon of fun at Madison Heights on the
8th May. All I heard from where I was playing was Gill
laughing. She had the three of the men you see, so was
enjoying herself immensely!
The competition between the men is definitely hotting up.
There was lots of tutting and hands on hips when shots
didn’t go quite to plan and then the realisation that it was,
after all, only a game.
We were in teams of mixed abilities, which made it
interesting. The more experienced players were showing
the less experienced players different ways of holding the
ball. Some of our group play petanque but the ten pin
bowling ball is held completely differently. Something
which has to be practised. Still, there were plenty of spares
and strikes and I think most people were happy with their
performance.
We meet again on the 12th June at 14.00 at Madison
Heights. I will not be there so Gill will be taking the group.
If you would care to join us, please just come along. There
are plenty of spaces for more players.

Threads and Fabrics Group
Colour seemed to be the subtext of our May meeting. Our
hostess had a magnificent bright pink Japanese Cherry in
her garden and most of our members had brightly coloured
work in their bags. I think that we are all eagerly awaiting
the summer weather. Hopefully, by the time that you read
this, the cold winds and driving rain will have gone for a few
months. There was much discussion on the complexities of
advanced patchwork patterns, which looked fantastic and
gave people something to aim for in the future. The meeting
ended with Anne setting us all a challenge to produce
something in Red, White and Blue to take to the next
meeting to celebrate the Jubilee.
Due to some confusion in last month’s diary, our meetings
are always held at 14.00 on the first Tuesday of the month,
unless it says otherwise in our report. If there has to be a
change Anne or I will let members of our group know
individually.

Walking Group
The May walk was postponed but, as it turned out, it was
fortunate because of the weather. The June walk will be as
planned for May. We will meet at the Chigborough Nature
reserve car park at 14:00 on Thursday 14th June. The walk
will be around the reserve followed by tea and a planning
session at the nearby cafe. Please let me know if you can
join us and bring ideas and maps if you have them.

Weekenders Group
Our last month started with 'Guys and Dolls', a show at the
Witham Public Hall, which was enjoyable and as
professional as some I have seen in the West End. Many
of the performers in the Witham Operatic Society also
perform in the Colchester Operatic and both put on shows
twice a year. One usually consists of young players who
are equally talented. These shows are thoroughly
Page 7 of 8
recommended and I will notify members when they are
being advertised. Anyone who would like to come along
will be welcome to add their names to the lists when they
are available, and not necessarily Weekenders.
Four of us went on a coach trip to Winchester on May 10th
and, despite the rain, we managed to have a good day.
Our May coffee morning was at The Loft at Tollesbury,
which was a new venue for us. We were made very
welcome and enjoyed the refreshments on sale.
Unfortunately, I forgot to ask what would be the choice for
our July meeting so I have made an executive decision and
opted for The Lock Café at Heybridge Basin on Saturday
21st July and, hopefully, it will be nice enough to sit outside.
The June coffee morning will, again, be a new outing at the
Woodlands Tearooms near Tiptree at the usual time of
10.00.
The 26th May outing was the Club of Jazz at Wickham
Bishops Village Hall which six of us attended and
thoroughly enjoyed the talents of the musicians in the
band. These jazz evenings are once a month and open to
any U3A members and the next outing is on Saturday 23rd
June and for anyone interested a sheet will be available at
the next U3A Monthly Meeting. As places are booked final
numbers must be notified, at the latest, one week prior to
the event.
As I am writing this on 29th May and it is still quite early in
the morning. Today, four of our members are going to
Brighton so we don't know how the trip will go but,
thankfully at present, the weather is fine but cooler but can
only hope they all have a great time.
Dates for your Diary
• Saturday 9th June: Woodlands Tearoom; 10.00.
• Saturday 21st July; The Lock Café; 10.00.

Wine Appreciation Group
Wednesday 20th June will be the date for our visit to Carters
Vineyards in Boxted. There will be a self-conducted tour of
the vineyard and winery at £4 per person (includes tasting).
There is also a nature trail though woodland and wild flower
meadows. As usual, car sharing will be recommended with
a meet time of 15.00 in the car park. If the weather is good,
I will bring along a picnic for us to enjoy in the picnic area.
Please add your name to the form at the June meeting or
give me a call so that I can organise car sharing and know
the numbers for the picnic. ,
