HELIX Project(Hp Eradication - LInuX integration)

A project in SL, ST, IT and PS

What is HELIX?

• SL project to replace WS ST project– Replace old expensive HP servers with new

cheap linux servers• File servers

• Data servers (TDS)

• Application servers….perhaps not yet…

– Use IT CERN wide services as far as possible• purchase, installation, configuration,

maintenance, ...

Existing Hardware SL and ST

• PCRSRV1 & PCRSRV9 each consist of :

- HP K-Class Server

3 CPU PA-Risk 8200

cost: 60,000CHF

- Eurologic El-RAID 300

20GB user space

cost: 38,000CHF

IT File Server (pcrsrv1 ?)

Experimental file server comprising :

– Elonex 24-bay cabinet

– Floppy + CDROM

– Linux system disk + mirror disk

– 2 sets 10 x 75GB IBM disks (RAID mirrored)

– 1.5TBytes < 30,000CHF

IT LINUX Farm (pcrsrv9 ?)

Data Servers (TDS)

• The third TDS server (for ENS) machine is a PC running linux.

• There is a spare linux machine as backup.

Application servers

• Now running applications for– ST/AA - FactoryLink or DVtools access– ST/CV - UMMI (DV) supervision– ST/EL - UMMI (DV) until ENS ready– ST/MO - UMMI (DV) supervision– TIS - UMMI and LabView

• A LOT OF SOFTWARE ON HP!!!!

What’s next?

• ST involved in project from the start!– We have many many HP applications and we depend

on SL services.

• User requirements phase– Each group will be consulted during UR phase– At first glance, we phase out rather than port sw

• Don’t panic (yet).– But don’t buy any more HP hardware without

consulting the Helix project team

Conclusion

• Should be a divisional project– Great impact on operation in many ST groups– Need for divisional strategy for the future (ST

CSWG)– Man power for SW porting and new hardware

cost should not be underestimated
