Heat Casualty Prevention
OPORD 16-137
OPORD 16-137 (Situation)-Leaders must always monitor Soldiers’ exertional activities, especially during hot and humid conditions. Korean summer temperatures routinely reach 90 degrees F at 90% relative humidity
-Every year, 2ID experiences serious heat-induced injuries from training or operating in hot environments. Heat injuries occur when Soldiers perform strenuous activities that overload the body’s ability to dissipate heat naturally
-Heat injuries range from mild symptoms such as muscle cramps, to life-threatening heat strokes.
-Irreversible health effects or death are directly related to time-to-treatment and core-body temperature
Opord 16-137 (Concept of the Operation)-All subordinates units establish rapid cooling stations in vicinity of training areas and aid stations, and conduct training on on treatment of heat injuries.
- Rapid cooling stations will be manned by medics of Combat Life Saver (CLS) qualified soldiers, who are trained to treat heat injury patients.
-Training events involving moderate to higher risk for exertional heat injuries include, but are not limited to: land navigation, gunnery exercises, ruck marches, unit runs greater than 5 miles, and organized physical training.
-Unit field sanitation sanitation teams (FST) will monitor and report the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) heat indices to the command team
-Rapid cooling stations will be utilized from 16MAY- 30AUG16.
ASIAN DUST TRAINING
OPORD 16-138
Asian Dust-Wind-blown dust swept in from the arid desert of Mongolia and China is a seasonal occurrence in East Asia.
-The “yellow” dust cloud form from loosening material from the Gobi Desert.
-The dust is largely comprised of sand/mineral dust particles, but contains high concentrations of inhalable coarse particles
-These particles can have an aerodynamic diameter of < 10 micrometers affects ambient air quality for Soldiers training outdoors.
