Be Winter Wonderful
With colder temperatures underway, this
season can pile more things on your to-do list. We
are changing winter tires, shovelling snow and
salting our roads, bringing out thicker coats and
hats, and buying cold and flu remedies! With these
best health tips, you can conquer winter and make
the season a memorable one!
PILE ON LAYERS AND GET MOVIN’! Yes, we have all been there. It’s cold outside
and you’re bundled up like a warm taco inside your
covers and don’t want to leave! But it doesn’t mean
you should be stuck indoors when the snow starts to
fall. Getting as much as 30-45 minutes of moderate
physical activity per day can do you wonders!
Exercise can reduce your risk for chronic disease
development, improve your immune function, make
you feel great (more endorphins) and more
energized! If you are an outdoors kind of person,
learning how to dress is the key game-changer that
will impact how you feel during your workout. On
top of proper snacking and hydration, layering is
just as important in helping you stay warm, dry and
comfortable. There are three main layers to consider
if you are heading outdoors:
1) Base Layer
Look for sweat or moisture-wicking clothing.
This allows for your skin to dry faster, making it
more breathable during your workout. Another
great feature to look out for is that the clothing is
lightweight and fits well, allowing range of
movements to be more free and dynamic. Choose
these ones for underwear, tights and long-sleeve
shirts. If you get cold easily, opt for insulated base
layers to give added warmth. Similarly, the fabric
of some socks and gloves these days also come with
heat-retention technology that will keep your
extremities warm during colder days.
2) Insulating Layer
This layer actually does most of the work when
it comes to keeping your body warm. Loose fitting
long-sleeves, pants, and sweatshirts work well.
Again, try to choose lightweight and sweat-wicking
fabrics. This way, moisture moves out, while heat is
retained close to your body. If you find you are still
cold, opt for insulated layers that are also wind-
proof.

www.carlsonlabs.com
3) Outer Layer
This final layer protects you from the
elements of Mother Nature when working
out. Similar to the base layer, the outer
layer should be breathable to moderate the
heat generated from your workout without
letting the wind in.
Consider investing in a good pair of
running shoes with better traction support.
Another option is to buy an overshoe with
spikes or extra grip that slips over your
current running shoes. These devices will
give you extra traction over ice and snow
during the winter months and will help
prevent slips and falls. Now that you have
the proper clothing and gear, don’t let
winter hold you back!
POWER SNACKS Feel like you need more boost this
season? Healthy snacks can be great pick-
me-ups! Load up on lean protein, fiber
and vitamin-rich snacks to give your body
and mind a nutrition boost! Pack travel-
friendly munchies like trail mix, granola,
drinkable yogurt, bananas, apples, carrots,
nuts and seeds. These easy-to-prepare
snacks will keep you feeling satisfied
without the added guilt.
REDUCE STRESS WITH FOOD During times of stress, vitamin C,
vitamin B, magnesium and tyrosine are
generally at lower levels. If your dietitian
or physician recommends this, you can
top up with a multivitamin, elemental
supplement or choose foods rich in these
nutrients! Camomile and lavender tea
have also been found to have calming and
soothing effects that can help counteract
stress and anxiety during the winter
months.
LIGHTEN UP! With darker and shorter days during
this season, some people feel less
productive, gloomier and generally sad.
This is actually called Seasonal Affective
Disorder (SAD). About 2-6% of
Canadians will experience SAD and
another 15% will experience a milder
form of SAD in their lifetime (Mood
Disorders Association of Ontario, 2015).
Light therapy (exposure to different types
of therapeutic light) has been found to
produce anti-depressant effects in 70% of
people with SAD, with most seeing
significant changes within two weeks of
starting light therapy.
MUSIC TO THE MOODStudies have found that listening to
happy and upbeat music with the intent of
being happier can actually make you more
happy. Having a positive mindset to be
happy, while listening to these songs
could actually work! Having said that,
don’t be afraid to sing and dance while
you’re at it!
BEING ARTSY Being creative can actually help lift
your spirits. Try doing arts and crafts,
writing journals, stories or poems,
dancing, singing, or playing an
instrument! 3
MEDICINE CABINET Fighting the cold and the flu can be challenging during the winter so it is important
to always have medications on hand. Supplementing with natural remedies like vitamin
C (or eating vitamin C-rich foods like bell peppers, citrus fruits) can also help boost your
immunity. Research has found that herbal ginseng and lemon tea can be helpful in
controlling for cold and flu symptoms. If you haven’t it is probably best to also get your
flu shot!
During the winter, we also tend to ignore allergies (the ones we get indoors).
Because we tend to shut our windows tight, the circulation of outside air might not
always happen and dust and dander may get trapped inside. If you have allergies to dust,
having allergy medication might be a good idea during the winter time. Also, it is best to
change your air filters once every month or every three months depending on the type of
filter. Manufacturers usually make a recommendation on their packaging or on their
website.
Best WinterBlues Busters
The top four natural heath products
Canadians will be incorporating into their
lifestyle this winter are vitamin D, omega-3
fats, calcium, and probiotics. These
important nutrients, when paired with a
healthy and balanced diet, will help maintain
health and happiness all winter long.
Vitamin D
Research over the past few decades has
given vitamin D many reasons to shine. It
has been linked to reductions in some types
of cancer, helps to improve the immune
system, and has shown benefits for improving
and maintaining good mental health.
Omega-3s
The spotlight has been shining on
omega-3 fatty acids for a few years, and it’s
only getting brighter. This family of super-
star fats has a laundry list of health benefits,
from the relief of inflammation and dry skin
to supporting heart health. Omega-3 fatty
acids –particularly DHA – have also been
shown to support the maintenance of a more
balanced mood.3

New World Leek and Pepper Soup Vegetarian
I call this soup “new world” because it’s a variation on theclassic French leek and potato soup, using sweet potatoes andpeppers, two ingredients that Christopher Columbus introducedto Europe during his explorations of the Americas. INGREDIENTS2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or butter4 large leeks, white part with just a bit of green, cleaned and thinly sliced 4 cloves garlic, minced1 tbsp ground cumin 1⁄2 tsp sea salt1⁄2 tsp cracked black peppercorns 6 cups chicken or vegetable stock, divided3 medium sweet potatoes (about 2 lbs/1 kg), peeled and cut into 1-inch (2.5 cm) cubes 2 green bell peppers, diced 1 long red chile pepper, minced (optional)Sea salt (optional)Roasted red pepper strips (optional)Finely snipped chives

This soup is tastiest when made with sweet potatoes, but ifyou prefer substitute an equal quantity of acorn squash. If you prefer, use one red and one green bell pepper.

Madeleine F., Quebec
My name is Madeleine. I am retired and live in Montreal. In my
spare time, I enjoy spending time in nature, painting beautiful plants and landscapes. In my later years, my eyes began to weaken. I was very sad about this, because I love painting, which is demanding on the eyes and requires accurate vision.
My optometrist diagnosed me as having Age-related Macular Degeneration (or AMD), and told me this only gets worse with time.
en I noticed an ad about Blue Berry, and I read about a man who had used it to maintain his eyesight. In hopes of getting the same results, I bought a box at the pharmacy. Now I have been taking it for almost a year and I am thrilled with the results. I am enjoying painting and my spirits are li ed.
I am very happy to have found this product from New Nordic, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take good care of their vision.”

1) SNOWSHOEING THE IRON MAN TRAIL AT SCENICCAVES NATURAL ADVENTURES NEAR COLLINGWOOD
For a winter workout with a spectacular view across the southern
part of the Georgian Bay, you would do well to head for the Iron Man
Trail accessed via the Lookout and Deepwoods Trail at Scenic Caves
Natural Adventures. Located just 15 minutes west of Collingwood, the
trail is according to Julie Card of MyCollingwood.ca, the best one in the
region to snowshoe. Over its eight kilometer length, you are treated to a
landscape of hills in an area of magnificent 200 year old maple, beech
and oak trees. You’ll pass the high point of the Niagara Escarpment and
have the chance to cross a 420 foot suspension bridge, the longest in
southern Ontario. Trails are well marked and almost always sheltered.
Skiing is $19 per day for an adult. For free snowshoeing, try the 7.1
kilometre moderately difficult Loree Forest Loop or a section of the
family friendly Georgian Trail, a rails to trails conversion running
between Collingwood and Meaford.
2) THE MALIGNE CANYON ICEWALK IN JASPER NATIONAL PARK
For a unique winter adventure that’s perfect for all ages,
try the easy and stunning Maligne Canyon Icewalk, located a
short drive away from Jasper. With some insulated winter
boots and a pair of crampons, you can safely negotiate a
section of the frozen Maligne River. Best done with a guide,
the walk provides a lesson in geology as well as the chance
over the length of the 90 minute walk to see human sized
icicles and an otherworldly view from behind a frozen
waterfall. Guided hikers will also have the chance to slither
into a cave on their bellies and look out at the ice-covered
world. Without a guide you likely wouldn’t find the cave. A
highlight for all is the sight of ice climbers on the largest of
the frozen waterfalls, located at the end of the walkable
section of canyon.
3) CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING IN ALGONQUINPROVINCIAL PARK
With a winter visit to Algonquin Provincial Park, you can
look forward to some of the finest cross-country skiing in
southern Ontario. The park is incredibly beautiful in winter,
especially on a blue sky day after a recent snowstorm. Trails
ranging in length from 5 -30 kilometres are uncrowded, yet
lovingly maintained and extremely well marked.
There are three areas for cross-country skiing within the
park. The finest trails are found in the Leaf Lake area, just
minutes from Algonquin’s east entrance. Although there are
several easy, and family friendly loops, strong skiers will want
do the 13 kilometre Pinetree Loop. It’s been called the best
ski trail in southern Ontario. After a couple of stiff climbs you
are rewarded with expansive views and some fun, fast
downhill. But before you begin the descent, take a lunch
break at the cozy Pinetree Cabin (one of several along the
trails), located at the high point of the trail. And don’t forget
to feed the blue jays with the birdseed available in the
cabin.3

Take care of yourself first, so you can look after those that
matter most, your family. That’s what formulator and nutritional
researcher, Dr. Peter Josling had in mind when he first set out with
partner Norman Bennett, to stabilize the world’s first extract of
allicin from garlic. Through this groundbreaking development,
Peter’s extract from garlic, has been changing lives ever since.
Garlic has been used by people around the world for millennia
as a food, spice and medicine. It is thought to have originated in the
Kyrgyz desert in Siberia, though it was imported to Egypt to provide
health benefits for the workers who built the pyramids. Garlic has
been historically used to treat infections such as typhoid, cholera,
smallpox, dysentery, plague, anthrax and tuberculosis until
sulphonamide antibiotics became widely used.
Dr. Peter Josling, can be heard from time to time doing radio
interviews and can be found on television as he presents the findings
of his research. Currently due to cold and flu season, he is discussing
a double-blind placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of
Advances in Natural Therapy on his product Allimax’s effectiveness
on colds, which people experience on average two to five times per
year. Allimax reduced the duration and severity of a cold and the
occurrences of getting a cold.
CLM Health Group, the Canadian distributor and its president
and CEO, Kate Maguire, can often be found in your local health
food store spending time with customers and staff, educating them
on the benefits of stabilized allicin from garlic. Maguire is Allimax’s
Lead Brand Ambassador. In this role, she travels around Canada
educating people on the health benefits of allicin.
Allimax with stabilized allicin is beneficial for the prevention
and treatment of bacterial, fungal and viral infections. There is also
substantial data supporting its’ cholesterol and blood pressure-
lowering attributes.

Allicin is the first compound formed when the sulphur
compound alliin, and the enzyme alliinase, are combined
through the cutting, crushing, cooking or mechanical
processing of garlic.
Allicin is very unstable and quickly changes into other
sulphur compounds. However, with Allimax’s patented
production process, the allicin is quickly diluted to a
concentration that can be stabilized to produce Allimax.
Allimax is the first stabilized allicin supplement that
provides real antimicrobial protection. Allimax’s active
ingredient, allicin, is effective against gram-positive and
gram-negative bacteria, including species of escherichia,
salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, klebsiella,
proteus, bacillus and clostridium.
Perhaps one of the most remarkable accomplishments of
allicin is its ability to kill the superbug MRSA (Methicillin
Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), a bacterium that
continuously evolves as it develops resistance to
pharmaceutical antibiotics. In a study completed at the
University of East London, 30 bacterial strains of MRSA were
tested and research found 12 of those strains resisted
antibiotics, while all strains were sensitive to allicin. Research
also found that the drug-resistant strains of MRSA were the
most sensitive to allicin.3
Kate Maguire is president and CEO of CLM Health Group, and is
Allimax’s lead brand ambassador. Find her in your local health
food store spending time with customers and staff, educating them
on the benefits of stabilized allicin from garlic.
Dr. Peter Josling, nicknamed "The Garlic King", has authored
books on the subject of the healing power of stabilized Allicin from
garlic. In 1997, Josling also formed a specialty chemicals division
to provide key garlic components including Alliin, Allicin, and
Ajoene for research and product formulation. He led a team of
chemists and chemical engineers in the invention, development and
manufacturing of the world's first commercially available, stabilized
and patented allicin.

We plan financial security for our retirement, but we should also
be planning optimum health in order to enjoy it. With age we expect
diminished eyesight, wrinkles and gray hair but we don't anticipated
one of the most serious declines that reduces our functional
abilities – the loss of lean muscle tissue.
OUR LEAN MUSCLE MASS FOUNDATIONOur foundation for strength, power, and balance, lean muscle is
key to enjoying life. Lean muscle mass includes smooth muscle
(which controls hollow organs such as blood vessels, colon,
stomach, bladder, and uterus), cardiac muscle (your heart), and
skeletal muscle (muscle attached to bones). You don't need to be a
bodybuilder to enjoy your later years, but you do need enough lean
muscle to maintain coordination, flexibility, mobility and your
independence.
AGING, EXERCISE AND NUTRITIONAging is associated with aches, pains and disease. However,
multiple studies show regular exercise is one of the most important
ways to improve muscle mass and health. For all the benefits of
exercise try all 4 types: 1) endurance, 2) strength, 3) balance, and 4)
flexibility.
Quality nutrition is even more important with age. There is an
inverse relationship between age and caloric need, thus a decreasing
appetite. Since muscles need protein for good health, inadequate
good quality protein intake results in loss of muscle mass. The
easiest way to feel stronger and improve quality of life is choosing
adequate high quality protein foods. Sometimes balancing needs and
restrictions is challenging, particularly for elderly people with
chronic conditions. Often a protein supplement can improve health
outcomes for older people at risk from muscle loss or malnutrition.
PROTEIN IS COMPRISED OF AMINO ACIDSYour body can make 'nonessential' amino acids from food but
essential amino acids must come from your diet. A complete protein
contains adequate amounts of all essential amino acids.
Protein supplements are split into 2 categories; animal based
(e.g. whey, casein, beef) and vegan (e.g. soy, rice, pea). Choosing
the right protein can be challenging because of the additives (both
functional and filler) which often reduce health benefits or make
them excessively sweet. There are two reasons for additives: most
proteins are expensive; so, additives decrease costs; and most
proteins (animal or vegan) taste bad.
VEGAN PLANT PROTEIN, WHEAT GERM A new vegan plant protein, wheat germ protein is gaining in
popularity. Wheat germ is packed with multiple nutrients to nourish
new plants. A single ounce provides over 20% of your daily value of
folate; thiamin; vitamin E; selenium; manganese; zinc and
phosphorus. In addition to being a good source of fibre and complete

protein, wheat germ is derived from whole food, thus no need for mechanical or
chemical extraction.
With a slightly nutty taste, wheat germ protein does not need added
flavours, sweeteners or additives, is low in calories and very versatile. You can
sprinkle it over oatmeal, cereal, fruit, salad, or yogurt; add it to your milk, water
or smoothie; or use it in cooking and baking. An added bonus; wheat germ
protein has no fat, cholesterol, or sodium and is easy to digest.
With our junk and fast food lifestyles, lack of adequate protein is common –
especially in older people and further exacerbated by reduced appetite and
physical activity. Using a complete protein supplement will help conserve
muscle, especially in combination with regular exercise. Maintaining an active
lifestyle and healthy eating is an investment in your future well-being and
lifestyle enjoyment. It's never too late to start!3

Have you ever asked yourself, what is a plant-based diet? It’s
pretty simple; the goal is to eat more plants. You may imagine eating a
lot of salads and sprouts, while others might dream of foraging in the
forest for some nuts and seeds. Well, it’s all that and much more! It may
seem like a very restrictive diet at first, but I promise once you start
discovering all the food you can enjoy that is plant-based, you won’t
miss a thing.
The next question may be, what exactly is on the menu? Of course
there are vegetables. At first you may want to stick with the ones you
already know like green beans, peas, and corn. But, especially now that
we get food flown in from all over the world, there is a dizzying array
of vegetables you can choose from. You can try anything from
asparagus to artichokes, squash to sweet potato. Fruits are next on the
list. Full of nutrients and fibre, they are good for you and your sweet
tooth! Good ones to try are avocado, blueberries, coconut, and pears.
Whole grains are important to a plant-based diet, but make sure they
are not refined or processed, which strips the grains of all the nutrients
and fibre. Try brown rice pasta, rolled oats and quinoa for a filling
meal. Legumes are important because they fill you up and are full of
essential protein your body uses as fuel. You can add lentils, kidney
beans or chickpeas to soups and salads. Nuts and seeds tend to be
overlooked because they are small but they are mighty! A handful of
unsalted, raw almonds, hempseeds and walnuts can really add a great
flavour to any meal. Many health benefits are associated with a plant-
based diet.

Natural processes bring about powerful healing.
Weight management: Plant-based foods contain less
saturated fat and fewer dense calories which can lead to weight
gain. The extra fibre provided fills you up allowing you to eat
less. Choosing complex carbohydrates will help balance blood
sugar, reducing mid-afternoon cravings.
Energy and vitality: Those green leafy vegetables and
fruits you’ll be eating will energize you due to the water
content in the food. Plant-based foods are easier to digest, not
weighing you down like animal-based foods.
Better sleep quality: Many plant-based foods are rich in
the minerals we need for quality sleep. Whole grains help the

Disease prevention: Plant-based foods provide the body
with phytonutrients; chemical warriors that help boost the
immune system and prevent disease. Eating lots of fibre helps
eliminate any toxic waste quickly from your system.
Although you can make the change to your diet
overnight, transitioning in a gradual way is okay too! In
addition you should also consider eliminating anything that is
processed and fried because these foods do not offer any
nutritional value. Whether you choose to go cold turkey or
transition gradually, don’t think you need to go it alone. Talk
to your friends and family, tell them of the changes you are
making to your diet, and ask for their support. Look for
community or social media groups where you can share your
experiences and ask for guidance from like-minded people.
It’s also a good idea to enlist the assistance of a nutritionist,
naturopath, or medical doctor. They can help with meal
planning, provide suggestions for food sensitivities, and
monitor your health and any medications you may be on.
Finally, to help with the preparation of food, take a cooking
class or buy a cookbook with plant-based recipes. Be prepared
to try new things, have fun experimenting in the kitchen, and
be proud of yourself for making a change to a healthy new
way of living!3

HEALING HERBS

The beaked hazel, often referred to as
hazelwood is a species of shrub indigenous to
Quebec, and widely spread across Canada. For
thousands of years, its twigs have been used by
Native American tribes in different ways to heal the
body. For example, the Iroquois prepared a tea
from its branches to heal dental pain. The Ojibwas
used its roots, mixed with other species, to heal
pulmonary hemorrhaging. The Potawatomis used
the inside of the bark in traditional remedies just as
they used willow bark, where salicylic acid was
discovered: the derivative of acetysalicylic acid,
commonly known as aspirin.
HAZELWOOD THERAPEUTIC BENEFITSFirst Nations peoples made external use of the
plant by placing a necklace made of branch pieces
around a baby’s neck to calm teething pain. Today,
thanks to scientific research and development, we
can better understand the hazelwood properties
from their high content in polyphenols, known for
their antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-
inflammatory effects.
The same way First Nations peoples used
small hazelwood twigs for their health benefits, we
still use hazelwood today as an easy and natural
way to aid various ailments caused by
inflammation, such as heartburn, joint pain, skin
problems, mouth sores, teething pain and more.
For best results, it is recommended to wear the
necklace or the bracelet in contact with the skin and
to change it every three months.
Over the years, the demand for the products
has been growing for use by the whole family.
Stylish necklaces and bracelets are now available
for babies, children and adults as well.3

HEART HEALTH ARTERIAL CLEANSEH

European mistletoe (Viscum album) – not to be confused with
the red-berried and highly poisonous American mistletoe is a
parasitic plant that grows on trees with soft bark like hawthorn and
apple trees. It is primarily birds who transport the white, sticky
berries from one tree to the next as they sharpen their beaks on the
branches. Once the seed sprouts it sends a hair-like root through the
bark of the tree deep enough to fuel its continued growth into a small
round bush. While the white berries are considered poisonous, the
leaves and twigs used in herbal medicine are not.
MYSTERIOUS MISTLETOE IN FOLKLOREMistletoe was famous among the Druids who believed it
protected the beholder of all evil and all illness because of the
powerful cures it made. The branches were used as decoration to
welcome the coming of the New Year which eventually encroached
into Christmas. The Scandinavians popularized its association with
love and that everyone who passed under it should receive a kiss.
MEDICINAL USESIt’s earliest uses were centered around the nervous system,
specifically for the “falling sickness” which we now know as
epilepsy. The first published paper on mistletoe came in the 1720’s
by Sir John Colbatch and was called “The Treatment of Epilepsy by
Mistletoe”. As a successful remedy, it was also used to treat
convulsions, anxiety, hysteria, neuralgia and the more prevalent
heart disease.
In the early 1900’s the use of European mistletoe for cancer was
popularized by alternative medicine practitioner Rudolf Steiner and
is now the subject of many promising cancer studies including
breast, ovarian, colon, lung, stomach, leukemia and lymphoma.
Contemporary European Herbalists Maria Treben and Jim
Strauss used formulas with European mistletoe to treat heart
conditions with great success. Both herbalists recommended it as the
best remedy for heart and circulatory complaints including:
hardening of the arteries, stroke, high and low blood pressure, poor
circulation (cold hands and feet), lack of energy, heart flutters and
palpitations. They also noted it calms a restless heart but also
strengthens it, something we all need to help with the stresses of
modern life.
In the last 5 years, studies are showing that mistletoe can reduce
the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation including nausea,
numbness, fatigue, insomnia, anorexia, diarrhea, hair loss and
chemo induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) ) also known as “pins
and needles in hands and feet”. It was also reported the patients
using mistletoe felt less anxious, less depressed and overall had a
healthy and hopeful outlook.
In 2009 an article published in Bio Medical Center cancer
researchers discovered how mistletoe treatment used after
conventional treatments reduced tumor growth while simultaneously
improving immune system function.
Laboratory studies on European mistletoe extracts have been
shown to kill cancer cells (mouse, rat, human) and prevent the
growth of new blood vessels that increase tumor growth. It protects
the DNA in white blood cells including those that have been exposed
to DNA damaging chemotherapy drugs.
European physicians commonly employ mistletoe preparations
(injections) in their cancer patient protocols. Thankfully these same
treatments are now available in Canada and the US and are
becoming more common since being popularized by Suzanne
Somers; who chose to treat her breast cancer with a European
mistletoe extract.
Homeopathic preparations containing European mistletoe are
available along with some rare herbal formulas made in Canada that
contain a much higher dosage of this healing herb.
So remember the mysterious mistletoe, not just at holiday time
but as a powerful, everyday treatment for cancer and curative
medicine of the heart. Bearing these tremendous benefits it’s no
wonder European mistletoe evokes strong feelings, kisses and
love.3

1) HEALTHY FATSBy adding more healthy fats to your diet you will help to keep
your cholesterol in check, balance your blood sugar, lower your blood
pressure, and stay satiated throughout the day to prevent cravings at
night. Natural healthy fat sources include avocados and avocado oil,
olive oil, coconut oil, nuts & seeds, and wild fish. Avoid trans fats,
including fried fast foods, baked goods, pre-packaged processed
foods, and anything “partially hydrogenated” like margarine.
StePS to aHealthier Heart5
While most of us are familiar with the more obvious risk factors for heart disease such as
smoking, alcohol, physical inactivity, and stress, there are also simple ways that you can
tweak your daily nutrition to optimize the health of your heart and cardiovascular system.
With heart disease affecting more than 1.37 million Canadians and being a leading cause
of death in Canada, implementing a few daily changes can be extremely worthwhile.
2) LOWER YOUR SUGAR INTAKEThe latest research confirms that sugar has an important
correlation to heart disease. Even when accounting for all other
risk factors, high sugar intake is shown to increase one’s risk of
having a heart attack. Sugar has been shown to cause elevations in
LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and of course,
insulin resistance. Sugar also triggers inflammation, which is a
contributor to heart disease. Start reducing your daily intake by
cutting out juices, sodas, and sweetened coffees or teas you drink,
as they are a major source of concentrated sugars.
3) ADD GARLIC TO YOUR DIETThis powerful herb has a variety of cardiovascular benefits.
Garlic can improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, reduce LDL
(bad) cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
Garlic has also been shown to protect arteries from plaque buildup
and calcification. Aim for three cloves a day, divided between
meals. Use caution with garlic consumption if you are on blood
thinning medication, as this can enhance the effects.
4) COENZYME Q10Ask your Naturopathic Doctor whether you would be a good
candidate for supplementing with CoenzymeQ10 (CoQ10). This
vitamin-like substance is found in the mitochondria (a major site of
energy production) of cells, with high concentrations in the heart.
It plays a key role in optimal functioning of the heart, as well as the
development of various types of heart disease. CoQ10 naturally
decreases in our bodies as we age, and is also depleted with the use
of statin medications, used to treat high cholesterol.
5) L-CARNITINEThis amino acid is found in high concentrations in the
mitochondria of the heart, and has been shown to play a role in
preventing heart disease, working synergistically with CoQ10. L-
carnitine helps transform fats into energy, and protects the
mitochondria of the heart. Talk to your naturopathic doctor about
whether or not L-carnitine is a suitable supplement for you.3

Almost everyone perceives the heart to be the most important
organ aside from the brain. Our hearts beat over 100,000 times per
day for the sole purpose of circulating five litres of blood per minute
through our bodies! Blood circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients
to organs and tissue, and also removes waste products from our
body. If our heart stops, circulation stops – and we die. But long
before that happens, we may struggle for years with less than
optimal health due to inadequate circulation.
Yet, if you were to ask Canadians where they rank good
circulation as a health priority, in many cases it would be low on the
list. When we think of cardiovascular health we tend to think about
reducing risk factors for a heart attack. Lowering cholesterol and
blood pressure are examples of this. Vigorous blood flow has little
to do with these risk factors – it is a result of a cardiovascular system
that is healthy overall. The heart is critical to that but healthy blood
vessels and capillaries are just as important. Are we taking this
aspect of our cardiovascular health for granted?
In Germany where my father Sam Ibrahim trained as a
pharmacist before coming to Canada, robust circulation is
considered a health priority. More than once he told us in German
that “Kreislauf ist alles”, meaning “circulation is everything”. He
brought this focus on healthy circulation to his Canadian
pharmacies, where he used herbal medicines to treat thousands of
patients until he retired a few years ago.
We know a healthy heart and a strong system of blood vessels
are the key to good circulation. Many people have experienced
obvious symptoms related to poor circulation, such as cold hands
and feet. But even moderately poor circulation can lead to organ
degeneration, build-up of toxins, low energy, and impaired sexual
function. An article in the August 2007 edition of Rheumatology
discusses mounting evidence that vascular pathology plays a role in
the initiation and/or progression of osteoarthritis. Yet, in North
America circulation as a health concern is largely under the radar
and rarely discussed in the media.
BENEFITS OF A HEALTHY CIRCULATORY SYSTEMSo, let’s look at some of the benefits of a healthy and vigorous
circulatory system. Most obviously, the purpose of circulation is to
provide oxygen and nutrients to vital organs and body tissues. The
delivery of oxygen and nutrients is called perfusion, and it is critical
to our bodily functions. Poorly perfused organs are literally starving,
and over time will lose their functionality. The reverse is also true,
vigorous circulation will result in noticeable health improvements.
Higher energy levels, improved mental alertness, robust sexual
performance, better digestion and even more regular bowel
movements are among the many benefits.
HERBS & FOODS FOR IMPROVING CIRCULATIONCirculation can be improved by natural methods. Several
medicinal plants have been shown to be highly beneficial:
Hawthorn is known to increase the ability of the heart muscle
to contract, making the heart a more efficient pump. Circulation
improves with continued use as more blood flows from the heart
muscle into the arteries and capillaries. A side benefit is that
hawthorn helps the heart use less oxygen, meaning that it becomes
easier to sustain exercise without becoming “winded”. More
activity leads to even better circulation – a virtuous circle!
Garlic has been used for medicinal purposes for more than
5,000 years. Known to aid in maintaining overall cardiovascular
health, garlic helps prevent high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
It also aids in the lowering of cholesterol and triglyceride levels,
improves the ratio of good to bad cholesterol, and inhibits blood
clotting. Garlic acts to improve circulation by regulating blood
viscosity, or the thickness of the blood.
Bilberry is widely known as a medicinal plant that will help the
eyes (it is also sometimes referred to as “eyebright”). It’s no
coincidence that the eyes contain thousands of tiny blood vessels
called capillaries. Bilberry is used to improve microcirculation by
strengthening the capillaries, such as those found in the eyes and
other organs.
Cayenne pepper has antiplatelet effects and is effective in
treating excessive blood clotting, elevated lipid levels and poor
circulation. Cayenne dilates the blood vessels and speeds up
metabolism due to high amounts of capsaicin. This increases
circulation and blood flow to all major organs.3

Kreislauf ist alles (Circulation is everthing)As part of his pharmacist training in Germany, Sam Ibrahim spent 5 years studying herbal medicine. As a diabetic himself, he well understood the European focus on good circulation. On moving to Canada Sam was surprised to find a medical tradition that basically ignored circulation and focused on other cardiac issues like cholesterol. To remedy this, Sam created Kardovite® specifically to address circulatory problems, or “Kreislaufstörung” in German. Because as Sam likes to say, “Kreislauf ist alles”.
Kardovite®–the botanical solution to improved circulation Kardovite® is actually recognized by Health Canada as a traditional herbal medicine used as a heart tonic and to help support peripheral circulation. Kardovite’s synergistic blend of 6 powerful herbal extracts work in concert to improve circulation:1) Hawthorn strengthens the heart muscle leading to increased cardiac output.2) Garlic regulates the viscosity of the blood, allowing it to flow more freely.3) Cayenne dilates the major blood vessels, allowing more blood through them. 4) Bilberry strengthens the small blood vessels found in the eyes and kidneys, enhancing micro-circulation.5) Valerian reduces the “flight or fight” response, a cause of blood vessel constriction.6) Milk Thistle supports the liver in processing more toxins out of our system, a happy by-product of improved blood flow.
Why good circulation is so importantOur hearts beat 100,800 times per day for the sole purpose of circulating 5 litres of blood per minute through our bodies! Blood
circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients to our cells and also removes waste products at the same time. This process is called
perfusion. Greater circulation helps all our organs and cells to function better, leading to an overall improvement in health and
vigor. Athletes have known this for a long time – what about the rest of us?

What are the benefits of improved circulation?Besides visible improvements in health and vitality, there are specific benefits from improved circulation:
Promotes cell growth and organ function. Healthier skin that is warm to the touch and better able to fight infection. Higher energy and ability to work. Potentially improved sexual performance. Improved mental acuity. Better able to handle stress. Faster recovery after exercise. If you are diabetic, reduced risk of health complications due to circulatory problems.

HEALTHY DIRECTIONS | www.healthydirections.ca Winter 2015 29
It is cold outside but our hearts are often warmed by
February's celebration of love. Flowers, cards, candy and gifts are
shared. Dinner in your favorite restaurant with friends and loved
ones can become an exciting event. Everything should be perfect.
But for some men and women, skin conditions can mar even the
most special events. Children and teens are also affected and
embarrassed by many skin conditions.
It’s not just a small deal. The skin is the largest organ in the
body. In many ways, it is also the most sensitive. The derma
responds to the environment, toxicity and our diet. Principal skin
problems include acne, cystic acne (in children, teenagers or
adults) and rosacea. Also, there are all types of herpes (especially
cold sores and shingles), psoriasis, eczema, rashes, hives and
many others. In order to successfully overcome these skin issues
for all ages, it is essential to target the root cause and address all
the triggers of the outbreak from the inside.
People who suffer from different conditions do so in summer
or winter, rain or shine. Many find they are dealing with pain, an
unsightly condition that affects their self-esteem, and a weakened
immune system. Often this spiraling effect goes on for years with
no relief in sight. The results can be so debilitating people often
do not want to go out into the world for any reason, even a lovely
February evening to share with the special people in their lives!
The use of natural medicine – namely, the coordinated use of
herbs and vitamins – has been a widely accepted therapy. It works
both preventively and for healing bacterial and viral skin
problems. Many years ago, Dr. Wayne Diamond, a naturopathic
physician and psychotherapist with a 30-year, full-time, private
practice in Philadelphia, researched ways to combat these skin
conditions. His research showed there are many important steps
to attaining clear, healthy skin, such as:
CLEANSING THE SKIN, THE LIVER AND THE BLOOD OF TOXINS
Herbs have been used for thousands of years to safely
promote internal cleansing. Dandelion root cleanses the liver and
blood of toxins and balances the skin pH levels. It improves the
function of the kidneys, pancreas, spleen and stomach.
Sarsaparilla root cleans the blood of impurities. It is useful for
hives, nervous system disorders and psoriasis.
BALANCING THE BODY'S CHEMISTRY AND NERVOUS SYSTEM
Stress, anxiety and imbalance are huge triggers of an
outbreak! These factors cause the body to undergo dramatic
changes. They have a very negative effect on the health and clarity
of our skin, often pushing the sufferer over the edge towards more
skin outbreaks. L-tyrosine is an amino acid, neuro-transmitter,
and is very useful to reduce the skin's absorption of stress.
By Leslie Anne Diamond
Fall in Love with Your Skin again
ADDRESSING CIRCULATION AND INFLAMMATION Healing skin layers and balancing the pH of the skin is essential to
obtaining clear, healthy skin. Beta carotene is necessary for the repair
and maintenance of skin and mucous membranes. It also enhances the
immune system. Vitamin E helps to prevent cell damage, improves
circulation and repairs tissues. Selenium is an antioxidant working
synergistically with Vitamin E to protect the tissues and cell membranes.
BUILDING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM This prepares the body to be healthy enough to fight off future skin
outbreaks and illnesses. Astragulus root protects the immunity, aiding in
adrenal gland function and digestion. Ligustrum stimulates the immune
system, decreases inflammation and protects the liver. Echinacea is good
for your immunity and combats irritation caused by bacterial and viral
infections.3
Out of Dr. Diamond's research came an incredible formula … Herpanacine SkinSupport System. For the past 25 years, this natural formula has included all ofthese powerful ingredients. Visit: www.diamondformulas.com or buy at your localhealth food store.

allow them to continue to grow and strengthen. Moreover, it will always
be wise to take action to improve these connected systems.
A FORMULA FOR WELL-ADVISED PARENTSVirage Santé's probiotic formula Pedi-Biotic is specifically designed
for the digestive, gut, and immune health of young children and infants.
This probiotic powder formula helps support the growth and development

VALUABLE STRAINS OF FRIENDLY BACTERIAPedi-Biotic contains three strains of Bifidobacterium
longum BB536, Bifidobacterium breve M-16 and
Bifidobacterium infantis M-63, as well as Lactobacillus
acidophilus LAC 361, a fourth probiotic strain. These four
probiotic strains are important because they are representative
of strains naturally found in the digestive system of young
children and infants. These strains attract attention for their
superior adhesion to the intestinal wall.
AN INDISPENSABLE ADDITIONA fifth component was included in Pedi-Biotic's formula.
This formula contains not only probiotics, but also prebiotics
extracted from arabinogalactan. They maximize the beneficial
action of the four probiotic strains. Together, they help
maintain and optimize the development of a healthy bacterial
flora in our little ones.
THE ACTION OF FRIENDLY BACTERIA The healthier the good (friendly) bacteria colony is the
better the production of antibodies and of certain B vitamins,
which are very beneficial for the nervous system, mood, sleep
and brain health. Also, a healthy intestinal flora promotes
greater assimilation of minerals from the diet and increases
breakdown of carbohydrates and starches (sugars). When
these dietary sugars are poorly degraded, they are often
generators of colic in children.
GUARDIAN OF YOUR LITTLE ONE'S HEALTHBy ensuring colonization of friendly bacteria throughout
the digestive tract, Pedi-Biotic helps prevent or alleviate the
following disorders:
● Allergies and eczema
● Flu and infections
● Infant colic
● Infant diarrhea
● Lactose intolerance
● Diarrhea associated with taking antibiotics
● Infectious diarrhea
Pedi-Biotic is the ideal support for the intestinal,
digestive and immune health of infants, toddlers and young
children attending day care centres.3

Natural, Exotic Sweetener
Lucuma FruitBy Renita Rietz
There is evidence from the ceramic art discovered from the Moche civilization of
northern Peru, which flourished from approximately 100 AD to 800 AD that lucuma
was a highly revered food.
Lucuma has recently gained attention as a new, emerging superfruit. Over 80
percent of the lucuma grown comes from Peru. Lucuma is extremely popular in Peru
and is used to make drinks, ice cream, preserves, yogurt and numerous pastries and
desserts. Lucuma resembles a greenish-yellow melon. The pulp has an orange-yellow
colour and the taste is pleasantly sweet and instantly recognizable with notes of maple,
citrus and custard.
In terms of nutrition, what makes this sweetener so beneficial is the combination
of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. This unique fruit contains calcium,
phosphorus, potassium iron, zinc, niacin, vitamin C, beta-carotene and fibre, mainly in
the form of insoluble fibre. Antioxidants in lucuma contribute to its potential as a free
radical scavenging superfruit. Vitamin C is beneficial on many fronts from enhancing
immune function to maintaining bone, cartilage and connective tissue formation,
enhancing wound healing and contributing to beautiful skin through the restoration of
the collagen matrix. In one in vitro study, a water extract of lucuma was shown to have
a high alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity, thereby showing its potential as a dietary
adjunct in the management of hyperglycemia and hypertension related to type 2
diabetes.
The inside of the lucuma fruit is a sweet, starchy and fleshy pulp reminiscent of
pumpkin, low in water content. While most lucuma is sold as a frozen puree, a whole-
fruit lucuma powder is the most desirable form. It has the most versatility when it
comes to the kitchen. The superfood company Organic Traditions offers a lucuma
powder that can be added to drinks, nut and seed milks, smoothies, water bottles,
yogurt, cereals and it can be mixed in with fresh berries with a drizzle of coconut cream
or Organic Traditions yacon syrup. It works well in most baking applications, but is

Beta-carotene is the pigment found in
foods such as carrots and squash that gives

Himalaya garcinia is organically grown in the native habitat of
the evergreen forests of India where it has been naturally harvested
and grown for hundreds of years. Himalaya garcinia is grown
without the use of pesticides or herbicides and extracted using a
patented process that allows them to retain the full symphony and
proportion of the plant constituents and co-factors. Himalaya does
this by keeping the extraction method the same as traditional
practices, by using water, resulting in a clean, pure, extract free of
solvents.
Utilizing a patent pending process, Himalaya binds their
garcinia in a caplet form using components of the plant itself. This
revolutionary process not only provides the whole herb, but also
makes it the only USDA certified garcinia on the market in a capsule
or tablet form.
THE THREE ROLES OF HYDROXYCITRIC ACID (HCA)An important constituent of garcinia cambogia is hydroxycitric
acid (HCA). HCA has been shown to play three key roles that may
lead to the promotion of fat loss and weight management.
1) HCA reduces the conversion of blood sugar to fat by
inhibiting ATP citrate lyase, an enzyme that converts
blood sugars into fatty acids such as cholesterol and
triglycerides, thus supporting the body’s lipid profile.
2) HCA redirects incoming food and stored fat into glycogen.
Glycogen is the body’s instant form of energy and does not
spike blood sugar levels. Glycogen also signals satiety and
increases vitality.
3) Lastly, HCA also increases levels of satiety, which
reduces appetite and cravings.
Himalaya recognizes that HCA is an important component and
have dedicated a significant portion of their Garcinia formula to
contain HCA extracted at 65%. However, in addition to HCA,
Himalaya recognizes the significance of all plant elements and
includes these in the formula as well. Consisting of the whole herb
containing fruit, fruit rind and leaf powder, the formulation of
Himalaya Garcinia makes use of the entire fingerprint of the plant.
This is important because there are constituents and co-factors in the
whole herb that are necessary to provide the positive health benefits
people have experienced from the traditional use of garcinia.
INTEGRATING TRADITIONAL MEDICINE AND MODERN SCIENCE
Many companies will make claims about the efficacy of their
products using borrowed research to validate them. Himalaya
validates the safety and efficacy of their products through human
clinical trials on the actual finished product purchaseable in store at
the dosage suggested on the label. Double blind placebo controlled
studies on Himalaya Garcinia have shown taking one caplet twice
daily post meals can increase feelings of satiety and fullness, reduce
occasions of overeating, help maintain a natural body weight, and
help promote healthy cholesterol and lipid levels. For example, one
four month clinical trial showed that Garcinia was able to reduce
BMI by 31.3% with no toxicity or adverse reactions observed in the
patients.
Integrating the principles of traditional medicine and modern
science, Himalaya is a worldwide pioneer in the field of
scientifically validated herbal health care. Our reputation is for
clinically studied, pure, and safe herbal health care products that are

Garcinia Cambogia
Garcinia cambogia, a tropical fruit also known as the Malabar tamarind, has become a popular weight loss supplement inrecent years. However, Himalaya Herbal Healthcare has been utilizing garcinia cambogia in its formulas for over 60 years,so the news that garcinia is an effective herb at reducing cravings and controlling appetite is not news to them. Himalaya’sUSDA organic garcinia cambogia not only works, but they have human clinical trials to back their claims.
