Architectural Design Basics - Nine Square Matrix
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Basics
Project Brief: Start with a matrix of nine columns and nine rows, all filled with number nine. Each student had to multiply the whole matrix with a rythmic system of certain numbers. Afterwards the whole matrix is extruded to a physical model using any material of our choice in the first phase. While the second phase was to select one row (or col-umn) and transfer it into a physical model. The idea of this small project is to experiment with creating architectural spaces, as well as playing with solids and voids. Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Basics
Project Brief: Design a house for a medium family; parents and four kids. The lot size is 500 m2
with three surrounding neighbors and one main facade.
Design Concept:Start with a simple geametrical shape, which the cube to create architectural spac-es. The main idea is to have extruded and resessed floors by these cubes, and to have a main core for these cubes to be attached with, and to work as the main verti-cal circulation space.

Architectural Design II - Artist’s Gallery & Studio
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Two
Project Brief: Design both; a gallery and studio for any artist from our choice. The studio is more of a private place for the artist to work on his projects, while the gallery is a public space which must be prepared to exhibit the artwork and allow people to come in and walk around. As to the building’s area, we were given a cube with the volume of 24m3 to work within it rather than a two dimensional area. And its in the desert, so there are no buildings around it.
Design Concept:Since the artist we chose is a sculptor, and he works with three materials, wood, bronze, and clay, I wanted to represent this by introducing three different levels in the gallery. Those levels are also to create somehow special atmosphere for each type of the exhibited items. In addition to that, the dif-ference of floors’ leveling breaks the monotonous experience.

Architectural Design II - Chinese Tea Pavilion
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Two
Project Brief: The project was to form a group of six students to design a pavilion for drinking chi-nese tea. This pavilion is 1:1 or real scale, it is more like a seating area to be placed in the middle of one of the shopping malls in Kuwait which is Al Raya Center. At the begining of the project we started with researching about the chinese tea, it’s story, history, and the way its prepared and served in order to know the arrange-ment of the seating.
Design Concept:The main concept basically is studying chinese proportions, applying them along with chinese structure, since they had special structural elements in their tradition-al architecture. However, the main concept we focused on, is the centrality which is represented in the main seating area. While the other minor spaces, which are the preparation area and the raception booth, are working as buffer zones oo transi-tion areas between indoor and outdoor spaces. These buffer zones are famous in chinese architecture. The buffer zone provides a smooth transition from a public and crowded zone into a more of calm, relaxing and quiet space where the tea is served. Centrality by itself is an essential feature in chinese architecture, in which most of their spaces have the square shape. And since both, centrality and chinese tea are important to chinese people, we took this direction to design the pavilion, the major seating area has a square shape, for the person sitting inside to feel cen-tralized.These ideas where all presented in the design differently. In order to appreciate the chinese tea, a calm and serene atmosphere must be achieved, which is the main central, static space. However, the path emphisezes the dynamic mode, where people walk, talk and make some sound.

Architectural Design III - Spaceship Design
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Three
Project Brief: As to this project, we worked on it in two phases; starting by spaceship design and ending by a prefabricated house.
I the first phase, as a start, the professor gave each student a well-known person or a scientist to get the inspiration from his/her personality. I got Alexander Graham Bell. I had to research abou him; his life, personality, and way of thinking. The most attractive thing i found about him was his curiosity to discover new things. Bell’s curiosity led him to invent the telephone.
Design Concept:I started off by the word “curiosity”. I imagined i to be something vague and at-tracts people to be curios about it and discover it. And for me, I focused on using the curves for my design to give a sense of dynamism and ambiguity.

Architectural Design III - Prefabricated House
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Three
Project Brief: This Project is a continuation of the previous project “Spaceship Design”. We had to transfer the spaceship into a pre-fabricated house, which is portable and can be placed anywhere around the world. We had to maintain the essence and spirit of the spaceship. In addition to that, it is important to know the construction of this house from te very general to the smallest detail. We had to know how to join each two pieces together nd create a strong structure.
Design Concept:I tried to keep the essence by keeping the curves to be the main architectural element or feature in the design. These curves create ambiguity in the spaces and pathways. The form is more like a central area which has the main spaces, and the pathways come out, and lead to this main space.

Architectural Design V - Voluntary Work Center Headquarter- Sustainable Approach
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Five
Project Brief:Design a headquarter, which has several wings, each wing is dedicated for different department or different function. It includes offices, library, reception, divers wing, auditorium, studio, training yard, and storage. The owner specified the re-quired areas for each wing as well as the number of occupants for each one. In addition to that, they asked for a flexible build-ing complex which can be built at different phases not necessary at the same time. And it has to be sustainable building by applying sustainability techniques. The site is in Sharq in Kuwait City surrounded by differnt types of materials. It has unusual shape, so it requires different de-sign treatment.
Design Concept:I wanted to derive the design concept from the site, wich is broken by the streets and surrounding buildings. The form is also broken according to the site boundaries. I designed it in a way that it has different separated buildings so that they can be built at different phases. Also, I introduced some courtyards in the middle to make it more healthy environment by provid-ing it with the greenary and water elements. And in order to avoid the sun and the heat, all the walkways are shaded either by shading devices or by the buildings themselves. Another essential issue to be taken into consideration for the sustainable buildings, is the orientation of the building, and the amount of glazing according to the solar radiation. I oriented the build-ings in way that it reduces the amount of solar radiation entering the buildings.

Architectural Design VI - Club and Restaurant- Ministry of Defense
Project Information
Course: Architectural Design Six
Project Brief:This project was actually a competition held by The Ministry of Defense- Kuwait. We were given a site in Sabhan- Kuwait to design a mixed use building of both; club and restaurant. This building will be occupied by both; soldiers and officers. Each one of those people needs a different treatment in terms of design, atmosphere and circulation. Yet there are some spaces to be shared by both.Furthermore, we had to do the working drawings for this project. Which includes everything related to the project from the general to the very small detail, like the materials’ types and thicknesses.
Design Concept:Each student has to choose an architect to follow his style. After researching, I decided to follow Alvar Aalto. I found his style of architecture, and his way of thinking are close to the idea I’m look-ing for. He uses simple geometrical forms, and focuses on introducing the natural daylighting in a very powerfull way in most of his designs.I chose a library he designed as a specific example to follow in order to narrow down the ideas. The main thing that attracted me in this building is that it has two main masses, linked together in a central area, which I needed for this project. I had to separate the officers and soldiers, but let them gather at some places, that’s why I followed this concept. It’s like a whole rectangle but split into two masses joined together in the middle which is the required area for gathering, or for the facili-ties to be used by both; soldiers and officers. Graduation Project I &II - Mirroring Shoreline Traces
Project Information
Course: Architectural Graduation Project I & II
Project Brief:The Cultural and Art Center: The idea of Mirroring Shoreline Traces came after researching about history in depth and observe it by the heart’s eye. The main idea started by the selection of a site, and digging into it’s history. And in order to capture the essence of the site I had to look up old maps of Kuwait as well as old photos of that site. After a thourogh research for the site’s history, the main focal ponit that attracted me was the shoreline. I didn’t look at the shoreline only as a natural phenomenon, but also as a mysterious line along which many events took place in the past, some of them are still happening while others are not. And Since we are civilizing, our need for more transportation is increasing, which therefore leads to creating more streets. And as a result for the civiliza-tion, this shoreline moved away very far from its original place. But its traces are still remaining, these traces remained to tell us the story behind it. Furthermore, the idea of mrroring these traces on the other side came in or-der to re-vitalize this area by having a connection between two major sights in Kuwait; The American Hospital and Behbahani Complex. The project idea is to create a link between these two places, and this link is through a building which helds different activities but at the same time related to each other by having the same goal. As to the function of the building, it has a combination of workshops and exhibition areas, which is derived from the essence of the site’s history and events happened in the past.

Research
The research here will be focusing more on the site itself (and Specifically
The American Missionary Hospital), the essence and spirit of the place. I found huge
collection of old photos from which I tried to capture this essence. These photos
were taken through the period from 1912 until today. I chose few of them for the
portfolio.
This part will be like a journey through the past or the history of this particu-

Site
The site is located in Watya, in Kuwait City, an area in Kuwait which has a very rich history, with so many sights to visit. It has so many
remainings that tell us stories about our past, heritage and culture. The two main sights I’m focusing on are the American Missionary Hospital and
Behbahani Complex between which the link will be.

American Hospital and its Relation to the Sea
From the research I did, and according to the interviews with old people, I
found out that the American hospital was too close to the sea. They were almost
touching each other. But now, as we civilized and the roads increased in number,
Arabian Gulf Street appeared. The Arabian Gulf Street became like a huge barrier
between the hospital and the sea. The distance between them was only few meters
but now it became kilomemeters. This huge change in the distance attracted my
attention, so i focused on that in my research.
I started to collect old maps of Kuwait during several years. In addition to
that, old photos also gave me some impression about the distance between the
shoreline and the hospital, and about the depth of the sea as well. The pictures in
this page and the next one show the developement happened in Kuwait from the
early nineties (aroun 1912) until today(2008).

Theme
Mirroring Shoreline Traces
Reading history in a typical way is not the best way to read it. Yet, we have
to observe history by our heart’s eye, we should feel it and interact with it as we are
living in it and within its’ time boundaries. Looking at it from different perspectives
will open for us different doors to observe the history through, just like what
happened with me, I saw something different, something I never thought about.
At first, I started to think about a site, a place where I can inspire a project
from, unexpectedly, a site came into my mind. A place I love, a place I can feel it,
and I feel it has something.
The site, as I mentioned previously, is in Watya; Kuwait City, between the
American Missionary Hospital and Behbahani complex, I used to love this place, but
I never knew the mystery behind it. My curiosity to know about the site led me to
research more about it, so I started to look at books, read about it and look at old
photos. In addition to that, I interviewed some old people and asked them about
it.
While I was researching, I lived the experience as if it is happening now. I
found it such a great and impressive site, it has a rich history, a phenomenon, and it
was one of the most active areas and points of attraction in the past. Many things
happened on this piece of land throughout the history, but only few people who
realized that.
The most exciting photo I found was for few craftsmen or sailor men working
on their ships as if they are preparing them for a journey, its not only about the
picture and what those people were doing, but it gave me a hint of how the shoreline
was too close to the American Hospital, but it’s not close anymore. It seems from
the photo that the distance was too short between them. Since this photo was not
clear enough to give me the approximate distances between the hospital and the
shoreline, I started to research for more old photos and maps of Kuwait from which
I could guess few things.
Graduation Project
From the maps and old photos I was able to estimate the distances to re draw maps and do sections through the shoreline and the hospital. The
shorelines of the maps interwound together. The smooth lines I traced were the source of inspiration. At the begining I was just tracing them randomly
and see what I can get out of them. Until I relized something, these traces are meaningful, they were telling me a story, a story which I just could not
ignore and stop listening to. Hence, I decided to do something with these traces. So, my hands helped me with that, my brain stopped thinking about
it anymore. As I said before, At the beginning it was just some random sketches with no basis. But I thought there should be a base for everything to
build on it, so I tried to do several drawings until I found what I want. I tried to overlay these maps above each other. Once I overlaid the maps, I got
several interwound shorelines which were the deriving concept. As these lines were so meaningful for me, I continued drawing and re-drawing them
more and more.
Maybe at first it wasn’t something realistic or applicable, but as I proceeded I was getting somewhere with these traces. This process will be
explained by the drawings in the site interpretation next page.
Furthermore, after researching about the site in different time periods; the past, present day and future, I found that there is a new future plan;
which the municipality and ministry of public works already started working on. The plan is to create an extension for the first ring road which will pass
right behind the hospital. This plan attracted my attention, so I thought maybe I should do something that relates the past to the future through the
present. And as I mentioned before, the most two impressive things I found in the site were the photograph with craftsmen in front of the American
hospital, and the movement of the shoreline, these two things were almost the birth of the concept.
After all the research I did, in addition to the sketches and studies about the site, I wanted to link the story of the shorelines with the photos I
found for the site, both together. So, I decided to do this combination by mirroring the traces of the shorelines on the opposite side, on the backside
of the American hospital. Because I think these traces carry hidden signs and meanings, they carry the traces of the human beings’ existence as well.
I thought that this way, by re-creating the same image all over again will activate the area and give it life again. Hence, I can rely the whole
concept on the shorelines themselves which touched my heart very gracefully. And as to the technique I will be following to reach the design, I will
mirror these shorelines on the opposite side considering the American Hospital as a reference point.
What is the shoreline? The shoreline is an undefined line that separates between land and water, along this line many events happened in
the past, some of them are still happening and some are not there anymore. The shoreline carries a histoty of so many events took place there. But as
to the fact that it is not constant, and it keeps changing, it’s traces remained to tell us the stories of the past.
My question is how can we transform these traces into architectural project? Could we really transform a natural non-existing phenomenon
into a man made architecture? How can we take it from the non existence to the existence? From visual lines into tangible building with certain
experience?
Graduation Project
Site Interpretation
As I mentioned previously, I interpreted the site according to the way I see it or through my feelings after observing the site. In this case, the
focus will be on the shoreline, and the interpretation of this shoreline. We will see how it moved away from the American Hospital, and it keeps moving
away as we are civilizing. Hence, I tried to find out all the distances from old maps, in addition to the depth of the sea which I got from Kuwait Institute
for Scientific Research (KISR). Also I estimated some of the depths from old photos.
As a first step, I started by drawing some sections (below) through the American hospital and the sea to compare between them during several
years. Starting from 1950’s until what is it nowadays.
Section through American hospital and sea in the 1950’s. American hospital is few meters away from the sea.
Section through American hospital and sea in the 1980’s. American hospital is hundred meters away from the sea.
Section through American hospital and sea in the 2008. The hospital is kilometers away from the sea- no link between them.
A combination of all the previous sections, shows the huge difference happened during 50 years.
The second step I did after I drew the sections, was overlaying all the previous maps. After overlaying the maps, I traced all the shorelines
above each other (next page). I got a number of interwound smooth lines, having a form of a smooth ribbon. Since I had an idea of re-creating the
same phenomenon of people working in front of the Americn hospital, I decided to mirror these lines on the opposite side because I think in the
future it will be more active than the original place it was in. As a future plan, the continuation of the first ring road will be passing right next to the
American hospital, and parallel to the sea. So, the line I mirrored the traces about it is connecting the American Hospital with Behbehani complex on
the opposite side.
At the begining I mirrored all the lines I had from the tracing, but then I realized that it will not be practical or even feasible to have them all a
the same time, so I subtracted some of these lines and I ended up with few lines. And then, since these lines were so huge compared to the scale of
the site, I re-scaled them and made them smaller to fit the site.
Graduation Project
The result I got after I traced all the maps of Kuwait (from 1950’s until today) above each other- focusing on the shorelines
Graduation Project
Introduction to The Project
The whole idea for the project was derived from the research about the site and the surroundings. I finally knew what I want after all the re-
search, it’s a place where art and crafts, culture and traditions, and history all come together. It’s a center for crafts, it also teaches us about our history
and culture in a more modern way, away from the typical ways of teaching or gaining some knowledge.
For the part related to the history, it’s because of the important history about the site itself. And since along this line in front of the Arabian Gulf
we have a lot of places still recalls our culture and traditions, I though maybe I should conduct them all in my project. As to the arts and crafts, which
were the most impressive things for me, is because I saw some images of the spots, especially the one with men working and the American hospital
is a background for the photo.
Program Summary
This project will be targeting people with different ages and interests. It is a place for whoever wants to walk around and look at some artwork,
a place for people who have artistic abilities and they want a place to translate these abilities into a tangible artwork. Also, for people who likes to learn
more about the history and traditions of Kuwit through different media, they can watch some short duration movies in the medium size theatre. Not
only that but also at the end of the journey between workshops and exhibition halls you can have some rest at the coffee shop.
Architecturally, the spaces will be more like two integrated longitudinal pathways, parallel to the first ring road, and creating a link between
Behbahani complex and American Hospital. While other spaces will be housed in the basement. So, to summarize the program, there are three main
events which are the following:
The first pathway will be almost the core for the whole project. Based on some artwork related to the site and its history. This space is more
like a story, which you don’t read like any regular story, yet observe it by your heart. It even contains some sculptures, traditional sea crafts and weav-
ing which are more related to the history and culture of Kuwait. Architecturally, this space will be elevated slightly into an upper floor open to the
ground floor yet has a two linear staircase flights which represents a continuation of the landscaping which represens the shoreline.
The first pathway will be integrated with the second pathway which has different event but related to it. The second part will be visualized by
both, occupants inside the building as well as people who are passing by outside or they are just walking outside to experience the landscape .
This pathway is an open area which is used as a large workshop for different types of arts, in addition to a snackbar. This area will be an in-out space
because it will interact with people working inside and people walking around o the other side looking at the exhibited work, as well as people walking
outside. At the end of the pathway, and next to behbahani complex there will be a small coffee shop.
The third major space is the theatre hall which is located in the basement and appears above the ground as part of the landscape.
Graduation Project
The Transformation of the Shoreline Traces Into Architecture
After I got the intewound shoreline traces, I had to make them more realistic. I applied a grid taken from the nature of the surrounding build-ings on the ribbon-like curves. After that, I got a combination of straight lines and curves form which I created the outdoor area which mainly land-scaping with some buildings raised on the ground but with the same essence.
As to the building itself, I tried to pull it out of the landscaping, the curves on the ground starts to become more solid until the building ap-pears having the same essence but with more solid and exact angles. Furthermore, this phenomenon of linear and directional geometry continues at the same manner in the interior, specifically in the main gallery which will be explained more through the drawings and interior views.

Interior Design - House Interior
Project Information
Course: Interior Design
Project Brief:The project started by selecting any material and get the inspiration of the design from that material. After choosing the material, we were asked to choose two spaces from a given house and design the interior. The spaces I chose were the living room and the guest dining room.
Design Concept:The material I chose is like a fabric, but a little bit more solid, and it has a dynamic micro fabrics which are interwined together (figure on the right). I applied this mate-rial in different ways in the design. The main concept was to create the same patterns of the material in the interior by the light and shadow. So I used it in the light fixures, curtains, and translucent partitions boards. As to the colors, I used the beige color of the material to be the dominating color theme.

History of Architecture II - Spain and Morocco Islamic Architecture
Project Information
Course: History of Architecture II
Project Brief:After researching about Spain and Morocco Islamic Architecture, we had to choose one of the major buildings there and analize one of the architec-tural elements. This analysis was through drawing plan, section, and per-spective for this element. For the building, I chose The Great Mosque of Cordoba which I found really impressive. It has a hypostyle plan, with a rectangular prayer hall, and an enclosed courtyard which was essential in the Islamic Architecture, first es-tablished in Syria and Iraq during the Ummayad and Abbasid periods. As to the element, I chose the intersected polylobed arcades, with an el-egant variations on the basic architectural themes set in the earliest incar-nation of the mosque.

Project Information
Course: Environmental Building Control System
Project Brief:Throughout the duration of this course, we (a group of six students) attempted to integrate and fulfill a greater understanding of the various systems that make a building an operable and successful one. By carrying out studies of Al Ahmedi Office Building designed by a student from design IV, we attempted to take the building from the form making process that it was derived from and make into a more structurally stable and operable building. By the integration of fire escape methods, water sprinklers, designing an efficient HVAC mechanical system, de-signing a solid and efficient wall construction for the building, as well as by the application of several other building systems we attempted to carry out what started off as a basic building to a more efficient and able building. I chose a couple of the drawings we did to put them in the portfolio.
