HARTMANN’S MOUNTAIN ZEBRA

HABITAT• The Hartmann Mountain Zebra’s habitat is dry, stony mountain’s and hills.

DESCRIPTION• Color-Black and white stripes and sometimes brown

• Weight- about 660 lbs. (pounds)

• Size-the biggest Hartmann’s mountain zebra was about 5ft. at the shoulders

• Diet (food)- tufted grass, bark, leaves, fruit, and roots

YOUNG (OFFSPRING)• Foals weigh approximately 55 pounds at birth. The foals white stripes are more brown

than white. As the foal grows its stripes turn turn white. The foal can stand on its feet an hour after it is born. It can run with a herd after a few hours after it is born. That helps it escape from predators.

PREDATORS• The Hartmann’s mountain zebras predators are lions, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, african

wild dogs, and humans.

ESTIMATED REMAINING POPULATION • The estimated population of the Hartmann mountain zebra is about 25,000.

REASON IT IS ENDANGERED• The Hartmann Mountain Zebra is endangered because of its fragile enviroment.

CONVERSATION MEASURES• Some populations of the mountain zebra are protected in national parks. There is a

European Endangered species Program (EEP) for this zebra as well as cooperative management of zoo populations world-wide.

OTHER INTERESTING FACTS• The Hartmann mountain zebras looks whiter than the Cape mountain zebras because

there black stripes are narrower. Each zebra has a different stripe pattern, like humans thumbprints.
