Touch PanelsThe Beginnings of the Touch PanelFirst appearing in the 1980s, touch panels evolved through a number of transitional phases, and were gradually incorporated into products for business and entertainment.
When first marketed, touch panels were widely used as control devices for stationary terminals such as FA systems, medical equipment, and POS units. After that, they were adopted in PCs running Windows 95, launched in 1995, and information terminals such as PDAs, which appeared in 2000. Later, they became mainstream through the shift to mobile terminals. Today we have many chances to use touch screens in consumer products like smartphones and tablet computers, and applications like automotive navigation systems and digital signage.
A quarter of a century has passed since the appearance of touch panels, and they are at work in a variety of products as a familiar input device. Commodification as a daily necessity is progressing, and products are taking on forms enabling easy operation by anyone using a touch panel.
The Aim is Performance in Terms of QualityThe display is the face of a product. We are very demanding about performance precisely because a touch panel is attached to the front of the display. Our products make commitment to performance a reality. Touch panels made by Gunze are devices that enhance the abilities of designers. We propose products at a higher level, closer to the ideal, which don't compromise the sophisticated ideas or inspiration of the products designers conceive.
〇Panels made of glass are the main-stream type of capacitive touch panel, but Gunze offers products made of film by exploiting the material technologies we have cultivated. We deliver capacitive touch panels that are thinner and lighter than those made of glass.
〇In this product, a capacitive touch panel and LCD are laminated together, and we offer quality assurance for the combined unit. These units are suitable for industrial applications such as FA equipment, public terminals, and medical systems.
〇Capacitive buttons are applications of wiring printing technology. By forming a mesh-shaped pattern on film, we propose products with outstanding bend-ing performance capable of light trans-mission.

●Method and structureA transmission-type capacitive touch panel uses a method of capturing minute elec-trical changes (in capacitance) when the panel is touched by a finger. These panels use a material configuration combining transparent electrode films patterned hori-zontally and vertically (Fig. 1), and the touch position is identified by detecting with an IC (touch panel controller) which pattern the electrical changes occurred in. By placing cover glass at the outermost surface, it is possible to provide design advan-tages such as durability against scratching and logo printing.
Touch panels come in various types with different principles of detection, such as capacitive, resistive, optical, and electromagnetic induction, and the specific type is selected to suit the application of the device the panel is used in. Gunze carries out integrated development and manufacturing, from materials to assembly, of transmission-type capacitive touch panels. These are also known by the name "projected capacitive touch panels" (PCAP), and their distinguishing features are input with an extremely light touch, and multi-point input.
●Principle of detectionThe electrode patterns are arranged to intersect in a matrix in the horizontal and vertical direction. Voltage is applied to adjacent electrode patterns, and if a voltage difference appears between electrodes, a capacitance corresponding to the insulator (inductor) is obtained. The human body is electrically conductive because it contains a large amount of water, and thus when a person's finger approaches a sensor, capacitance between electrodes increases. The vertical (X) and horizontal (Y) position where a change occurred is detected as the input coordinates (Fig. 1).
●Multi-touch (Simultaneous multi-point input)
When using multi-touch with previous analog resistive touch panels, the method emphasized processing with software. With input at 2 points, the system used the fact that data is detected in the interval connecting the 2 points with a straight line, and input was realized through software processing based on the time lag of the 2 points during input operation. Due to the principle of detection, the user had to apply force to the fingers to push the upper and lower layer into electrical contact, and thus the system was unsuitable for gestures. With a transmission-type capacitive touch panel, the sensor section has a matrix structure, and is capable of simultaneous multi-point input of up to 10 points. Also, detection is possible when a finger is simply brought close, without directly touching the sensor, and this enables smooth slide input, and stress-free gestures (Fig. 2).
Capacitance indicates the degree to which electricity tends to accumulate in an electrical element, and is normally used to indicate the size of a capacitor (quantity symbol: C, unit: farad [F]). The definition is: "The capacitance of an object is 1 farad if it stores 1 coulomb of charge when a voltage of 1 volt is applied at a certain location."
A capacitive touch panel differs from touch panels using other methods in that its performance depends on a controller, and thus these panels must be examined as a set together with their controller IC.

With small and medium capacitive touch panels, the circuit scale is comparatively small, and therefore it is possible to use COF (Chip On FPC) in which a con-troller IC is mounted on FPC.
Our company has standard COF, and touch panel space-saving can be achieved without customers bearing the burden of COF development costs.
Standard capacitive touch panels of size 15 inch or higher are equipped with a common PCAP-EE01-0-PCBA controller. In applications with a severe noise environment, such as factory equipment, the PCAP-EE03-01-PCBA with outstanding noise resistance is available as an option. We also provide custom support to handle non-standard capacitive touch panels, changes in communication system, and changes in applicable OS, etc. For details, please inquire with our sales contact.

Capacitive Buttons (Capacitive Switches)
Gunze develops and manufactures capacitive buttons using touch panel manufacturing technology. By using fine line printing technology, the button part is formed with a silver mesh capable of transmitting light. Cost reduction and stable production can also be achieved through continuous printing technology. Furthermore, the material used (silver) has outstanding bending performance, and can even handle bending of the wiring and button parts.
●ApplicationsCapacitive buttons improve design qualities, achieve both long service life and a click feeling, and realize intuitive operation. We propose buttons for a wide range of applications, including industrial equipment, automotive, consumer appliances, and home electronics.
Long lifeCapacitive buttons have no physical contacts and thus can achieve long life compared with mechanical switches (Fig.1).
Design advantagesCapacitive buttons can be freely designed with a fully flat or curved profile. Form can also be designed as buttons, a slider, or a wheel to suit your company's needs (Fig.2).
Customization(1)Buttons can also be provided with the click feeling by installing an embossed sheet at the outermost surface of the capacitive button (Fig.3).
(2)We can propose an extensive range of cover lenses (e.g., glass, plastic). Cover thickness can also be selected to suit your company's needs. Input detection is possible up to a maximum of 5 mm (Fig.4).
(3)With the cooperation of IC manufacturers, it is possible to distinguish water from a finger. This realizes compatibility with water drops (Fig.5).
