About the Assessment Levels
Students will be assessed in 10 ‘ac vi es’ all of which take place in nor-‐mal lessons:
1. Piece—rhythm and pulse
2. Piece—nota onal accuracy
3. Piece—expression and ar cula on
4. Piece—playing from memory
5. Technical exercises
6. Listen and copy
7. Improvisa on
8. Aural skills
9. Sight reading
10. Posture
Each of these ac vi es will be assessed at 12 levels of gradually increas-‐ing difficulty over the first few years of learning. The ac vi es at level 1 will start to take place during the first ten weeks of learning. The assess-‐ments will be integrated into lessons and should complement learning. Assessments have been specifically wri en for guitar at all levels.
Upon the successful comple on of levels 4, 8 and 12 a cer ficate and s cker will be awarded. Level 12 corresponds approximately to Grade 2. A er this level students can be entered for a Grade 3 examina on as and when appropriate.

Grades 3 to 5
Assessments for grades 3– 5 will be in the format of an exam. Examiners will be Music Service staff and will be specialists in the guitar. Students will need to do the following in the exam:
1. Play 3 pieces, from Rockschool (electric and plectrum guitar) or TrinityGuildall (classical guitar) syllabus, with backing CD if ap propriate.
2. Play scales and arpeggios as specified in the Rockschool (electric and plectrum guitar) or TrinityGuildall (classical guitar) syllabus.
3. Two suppor ng tests of their own choice from Aural, Sight- Reading, Improvisa on or Musical Knowledge. These are OCMS tests and are different to those specified in the Rockschool or TrinityGuildhall syllabus.
These exams are marked out of 100 and there are 3 levels of pass:
Total—100
Dis nc on—87
Merit—75
Pass—60
Grades 6 to 8
Assessments for grades 6—8 will be taken under the regula ons of Rockschool (electric and plectrum guitar) or TrinityGuildall (classical guitar), details of which are given in the appropriate Grade book.
