Guided Notes For Chapter 8 – 1 Changing Earth’s Surface

Wearing Down and Building UpWhat processes wear down and build up

Earth’s surface?

Erosion – The process by which natural forces move weathered rock from one place to another.

Sediment is the material moved by erosion.Weathering and erosion produce sediment.

• .

Deposition – The area where sediment is laid or deposited. Deposition changes the

shape of land.

Weathering, Erosion & Deposition act together to wear down and build up

Earth’s surface.

Mass Movement – Gravity is the force pulling rocks and other materials downhill.

• Four types of Mass Movement:• LANDSLIDES• MUDSLIDES• SLUMP • CREEP

Landslide – (The most destructive) When rock and soil move quickly down a steep

slope.

• El Salvador, 2001

Landslide

A Mudflow is the rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water (60%), rock and soil.
