From Father Mark Mertes, Pastor:
Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?
(Matthew 18.21) I’m sure Peter wasn’t ready for the answer that Jesus gave him to his question about for-giveness! Jesus tells him that he will need to forgive again and again and again for all kinds of reasons and in all kinds of sea-sons…..forgiveness is at the very heart of the Catholic life. The word comes from the ac-tion “to give away,” that is we let go of, give away, we move on from some event or hap-pening that has hurt us. We no longer focus on what has happened but rather, with God’s grace, we move on. We participate in Jesus’ great “letting go” on the cross when he let his human life go so that he could move on to the resurrection. Jesus also teaches that our ability to forgive will be the very measure of our ability to receive God’s forgiveness. To forgive is to allow God’s power to trans-form a painful event in our lives. It is to learn from the circumstances of what happened and go forward in grace. So let us all, over and over…….. Forgive and let go of those who have hurt
us in the past Forgive those who harm us with hateful
words Forgive our spouses for not being perfect Forgive our parents for not being cool like
other parents Forgive our family members for not know-
ing in advance what we want Forgive our politicians for being narrow
minded Forgive our Church for being slow to “get
with the times.” Forgive our Church for being too progres-
sive. So much to let go of! With Jesus and his Ho-ly Spirit, we can walk the generous path of forgiveness into fullness of life.

Spiritual Refreshment for Caregivers Caregiving is a holy vocation that truly imitates the loving example of Jesus Christ. But it is not easy and can take a toll on the very people who bring great blessings to others. Fatigue, depression, frustration – these and other effects can wear down the most conscientious caregivers. Present-ed by Maureen Pratt, Catholic author/speaker, Saturday, October 3, 9:30 AM to 4 PM.
