Greek Gods and

Goddesses

ZEUS (zoose was the supreme god of the Olympians. He was the father of many children with goddesses and mortal women. Zeus's siblings include: Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Demeter and Hera.. Zeus had the ability to control the weather. He is often shown with a lightening bolt because that was his weapon of choice. Supports both sides during the Trojan War.

HERA (HEE-ruh;) was the goddess of marriage. Hera was the wife of Zeus and Queen of the Olympians. Hera hated the many affairs that her husband Zeus had and often tried to kill the women or the children that resulted from the affair. She supports the Greeks during the Trojan War.

POSEIDON (puh-SYE-dun) was the god of sea and earthquakes. He was brother of Zeus and Hades. He is often shown with his trident that was used to cause earthquakes, tidal waves, and whirlpools. He uses his abilities to help the Greeks during the Trojan War. Instead of living on Mt. Olympus, he chose to live in his watery domains.

APHRODITE (a-fro-DYE-tee;) was the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. One poet said that Aphrodite was born from sea-foam. Another, said that she was the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Aphrodite had the ability to make people fall in love or hate each other. She used this influence to help the Trojans during the war.

HEPHAESTUS (huh-FESS-tus) was the god of fire and metalworking. He used the fire to make useful things like Zeus’ lightening bolts and Poseidon’s trident. Hephaestus was the ugliest of the gods and was thrown off Mt. Olympus when he was born because he was so ugly. He supported the Greeks during the war.

APOLLO (uh-POL-oh;) was the god of prophesy, music, healing, and the sun. Like most of his fellow Olympians, Apollo did not hesitate to intervene in human affairs. When someone died suddenly, he was said to have been struck down by one of Apollo's arrows. If struck with his arrow, you would be overcome with sickness. He also had the ability to heal people. He used his powers to help the Trojans.

HERMES (HUR-meez;) was the messenger of the gods and guide of dead souls to the Underworld. He is often shown with winged shoes that help him when he is delivering messages. Hermes is also known as the god of theives and trickery. He supported the Trojans during the war.

DIONYSUS (dye-oh-NYE-sus;) was the god of wine. Dionysus was the son of Zeus and a mortal woman. He had the ability to make you feel “drunk” and act in ways that you would not normally act. He helped out the Greeks during the war.

ATHENA (a-THEE-nuh;) was the goddess of wisdom and war. Her symbol was the owl. She would assist people with the strategy that was involved in battles. She was not the prettiest of goddesses, but she was extremely intelligent. She chooses to help out the Greeks during the war.
