Greece is home to more than 1400 islands

Greece is almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean sea

Athens is the symbol of freedom in the civilized world

Athens grew rapidly until it was one of the two most powerful city-states in the Greek world .

Most Greek city-states were governed by

rich land owner called aristocrats Women children and slaves were not

allowed to vote

Every year 500 names were drawn from the people of Athens those 500 people had to serve as the law makers of Athens for one year.

All citizens of Athens were required to vote on any law that the 500 people came up with

The ancient Greeks believed in multiple gods

such as Zeus the god of weather.

The Greek gods acted a lot like humans for example the gods had fights with each

other loved each other and even stole from each other.

The king of all gods was Zeus. Although Zeus was the king he still lived on top of mount

Olympus with the rest of the gods.

Zeus was the god of weather and people often called him the thunderrer

The first Olympic games were held in 776

B.C. They were held for five days every four

years

A two month truce was called through out Greece so that the people coming for the Olympics would not be harmed

The Olympic games were held as a festival for Zeus the king of the gods.

Before 600 B.C. Greece invented the barter

system

The barter system was a system of trade where you traded one good or service for another good or service

By 500 B.C. each city-state had come up with their own system of money.

A merchant usually only took coins from their own city so visitors had to find a money changer to exchange coins
