Project Title
Access Control in Wireless Sensor Networks
Abstract
Wireless sensor networks represent a special subset of wireless networks where the sensors act to collect data, that are to be forwarded to a collection point (a server). Due to the power limitation of such devices, the relatively high attenuation of the propagated signal, and in order to maximize the use of the shared resources, special access control algorithms have been proposed for wireless sensor networks. The purpose of this project is to undertake a survey of the latest algorithms proposed, identify which of them have been standardized, describe using approriate methods the operation of such algorithms, and carryout a simulation and/or analytic study in order to compare the performance of these algorithms.

The purpose of this project is to undertake a survey of the latest algorithms proposed, identify which of them have been standardized, describe using approriate methods the operation of such algorithms, and carryout a simulation and/or analytic study in order to compare the performance of these algorithms.

Location Identification in Wireless Sensor Networks
Neural Network Handoff Algorithm in a Joint Terrestrial‐HAPS Cellular System
Abstract
Handoff algorithm is used in wireless cellular systems to decide when and to which Base station (BS) to handoff in order that the services can be continued uninterrupted. We propose a handoff algorithm based on the Neural Network in a joint system of terrestrial and High altitude platform station (HAPS) cellular systems. As a revolutionary wireless system, HAPS can supply services for uncovered area improving total capacity of service‐limited area by a terrestrial BS. Radial‐Basis function (RBF) network is used for making a handoff decision to the chosen neighbor BS. The neural inputs consist of the averaged signal strength received from the serving and nearby BSs, user directions estimated by the MUSIC algorithm on an antenna array, and traffic intensities. Positioning a mobile station (MS) is obtained by apply the Timing Advance (TA) concept. Performance comparisons among the presented method and using the Back Propagation (BP) Neural Network and the conventional Hysteresis method are given in forms of handoff rate, blocking rate, dropping rate at the acceptable grade of service and the difference between the signal power radiated by the serving BS and the minimum required received signal power before call dropping for both Hata model and Rayleigh fading.

Project Title
Methods of Assigning and Borrowing Channels in a Cellular Communication System Using Genetic Algorithms
Abstract
The demand for mobile communication has been steadily increasing in recent years. With the limited frequency spectrum, the problem of channel assignment becomes increasingly important. That is required to achieve a spectrum‐efficient and conflict‐free allocation of channels among the cells while satisfying both the traffic demand and the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) constraints. Borrowing channel assignment (BCA) was introduced in the literature as a compromise between the classic fixed and dynamic channel assignment schemes. In a channel borrowing scheme, an acceptor cell that has used all its nominal channels can borrow free channels from its neighboring cells (donors) to accommodate new calls. The project is done in two steps ::** the first is solving the channel assignment using genetic algorithm,** the second is using the borrowing channel technique in a cellular communication system to minimize the blocking rate and interference.

Mobile‐based Visual Localization Aid for the Blind
Abstract
This is a computer vision based project that aims to help a blind person find her/his location in indoor environment. The blind person is equipped with a mobile phone that consists of a camera, a speaker as well as the stand alone localization application. The map of the indoor environments is described by a set of images. The localization is performed by extracting a feature from the image of the unknown location and comparing it the features of the environment. The feature which has the nearest distance to that of the novel image is considered and a voice massage is sent the blind person with the location information.

Project Title
Vector Quantization Based Text‐Independent Speaker Identification Using Small Training Data and Fast Search Algorithms Applied to Control Applications
Abstract
Speaker identification is a branch of speaker recognition. Speaker identification is the process of automatically recognizing who is speaking by using speaker specific information included in speech signals. This technique can be used to identify the identity of people accessing systems. It enables access control of various services by voice. Applicable services include voice dialing, telephone shopping, database access services, information and reservation services, voice mail and remote access of computer. A set of short‐term training feature vectors of speaker can be used directly to represent the essential characteristics of each speaker. In this project, we use one of the VQ algorithms to train speaker models nondiscriminatively. Taking into considerations the nature of speech signal and the correlation between speech frames, we use another algorithm to train speakers models, the criteria of later algorithm is minimizing the classification error. Then, we introduce a modification to this algorithm to improve the identification rate. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational load effectively without a significant reduction in the identification rate.

Security System Based on Face Recognition
Abstract
Biometric systems are used to identify or verify human beings through their behavioral and physical characteristics. Face is one of the most significant features at all for other biometrics. We aim to use powerful techniques to extract face features to distinguish persons with high performance. One method is Eigen Face that based on the mathematical algorithm Principal Component Analysis (PCA) . The wavelet transform coefficients can be also used for feature extraction, which produces the feature components in a low dimensional subspace of an image, even under moderate variation in lighting and facial expression. A neural network (NN) based algorithm will be applied for face recognition, which is insensitive to variation of lighting and facial expression.

Image Compression Applied to Face Recognition
Abstract
Biometric systems are used to identify or verify human beings through their behavioral and physical characteristics. Face is one of the most significant features at all for other biometrics. We aim to use powerful techniques to extract face features to distinguish persons with high performance. A codevector referred (or matched) count histogram, which is obtained by vector quantization (VQ) processing of the facial image, is utilized as a very effective personal feature. By applying appropriate low pass filtering and VQ processing to a facial image, useful features for face recognition can be extracted. The wavelet transform coefficients can be also used for feature extraction, which produces the feature components in a low dimensional subspace of an image, even under moderate variation in lighting and facial expression.A neural network (NN) based algorithm will be applied for face recognition, which is insensitive to variation of lighting and facial expression.

Smart Antenna – Beamforming Techniques
Abstract
Beamforming is a technique in which an array of antennas is exploited to achieve maximum reception in a specified direction by estimating the signal arrival from a desired direction (in the presence of noise) while signals of the same frequency from other directions are rejected. This is achieved by varying the weights of each of the sensors (antennas) used in the array. It basically uses the idea that, though the signals produced from different transmitters occupy the same frequency channel, they still arrive from different directions. This spatial separation is exploited to separate the desired signal from the interfering signals. In beamforming the optimum weights are iteratively computed using complex algorithms based upon different criteria.

Adaptive Antenna for Wi‐Fi System Enhancement
Abstract
The use of Wi‐Fi supported devices is increasing rapidly nowadays. But the limited range of Wi‐Fi signals and low SNR that leads to low data rates makes it less reliable and decreases its mobility. There are two approaches that will be designed and implemented in this project to solve these two problems. First one is by using a high gain directional antenna and moving it mechanically in various directions. Second approach is by using the smart antenna methodology which uses an array of antennas to focus its beam on a desired direction.

Project Title
Demonstration of the RF Pulse Compression Technique
Abstract
The need for high gradient accelerators, where charged particles can acquire very high kinetic energy over small distance, is somehow limited by the available high power RF sources used to drive those accelerating structures. One way to increase the peak power is the use of RF pulse compression, where higher peak power can be attained over shorter pulse width. In this project, a demonstration of this idea, is done. However, the technique will be applied on a low power RF circuit, as it is the only technology available in hand. Simulation of the RF compression circuit is performed with the presentation of the theoretical idea. The RF pulse compression circuit will be fabricated, as well.

Fault Injection Tool for Embedded Operating Systems Evaluation
Abstract
Current operating systems technology is groaning under the weight of the requirements of embedded systems. An opened track of research at NARSS(National authority for Remote sensing and Space Sciences) is to evaluate the reliability of the different current operating systems –used in embedded systems‐ against faults and errors that occur in space. Space environment is harsh and bits flips are known to happen. Many different fault tolerance techniques are used to mitigate such faults. In order to evaluate those techniques without trying them in real environment is to design a SW test tool for that purpose. In this project it’s suggested to design and implement a tool that inject faults in the SW under test at run time and is able to detect the resultant impact on program’s execution.

Home Automation System
Abstract
There has been a quick development in automated systems area during the last decade. These days, the wireless automated systems with high speed and long range applications attract most of the attention. Our project is about building a home automated system using two control strategies; the first one is via speech recognition, while the second is remotely over the internet. The communication system in the project is based on Zigbee wireless technology (IEEE 802.15.4 Standard) which excelled other wireless technologies in low cost, low power, low data rate and has proved to be of much higher performance for home automation systems. The hardware system consists of microcontrollers, motors and sensors such as gas sensor and motion sensor.
