The summer program at DW Poppy Secondary School has been designed to keep students connected to school and give them a head start as they transition into Grade 8. Moving to high school or simply changing schools can be a challenge for many students and extra time and suppor t c an make a huge difference in making a smoother, more successful transition.

We have designed a program that will include a variety of academic and recreation al activi ties

wit h an e mphasis on Musical Theatre and Physical Education . The curriculum is designed around being a successful student. In addition to core academic skills, we will focus on organization , cooperation , problem solving and working collaboratively with peers. The program is designed to be experiential and allow students to explore and partic

ip ate in the school community.

No school supplies are required, but we do ask that students bring a lunch on a daily basis. There may be some lunches provided. We will advise students of this in advance. Breakfast will be available if required. Due to the heat in the summer we ask parents pack adequate water and sunscreen. Please have students put on sunscreen before they leave the house, as we will be outside for a portio

n of the day.

Dates: Tue, July 2 - Fri, July 5 Mon, July 8 - Thu, July 11Time: 8:20 am - 1:30 pmPhone: 604-530-2151

SUMMER PROGRAM 2019

DWP Summer Program – Mr. Gollub

“How does Fostering a Culture of Learning

at Poppy lead to

increased student engagement

and student achievement?”

• Focus on skill development and building core competencies

• Focus on learning; not grades

➢ Assessment focused on feedback/self-assessment

• Building positive connections with learners

• Create flexible structures/learning opportunities

Our School Goal

• Poppy PE Strip for all Grade 8 and 9 students

• High quality t-shirt and shorts – approx. $20

• Paid as part of student fees

• Creates strong school culture/removes issues around clothing

styles and brands

Grade 8 PE Strip

• Students are allowed to bring phones to school

• Specific classroom rules vary up to individual teacher

• School wide concern regarding “distracted learning”

• Working at educating students about time and place

and students/parents about impact of phones on

learning, family, health etc.
