Classroom Percussion Instruments

Percussion- means striking one objects with other against each other.

Classroom percussion instruments are played by:

• Beating and striking with a mallet, beater, or simply with the hands.

• Shaking, rubbing, scraping

There are two group of percussion instruments.

Pitch percussion instruments – have definite pitch

Non pitched percussion instruments – have indefinite pitch

A. Pitch percussion instruments

Glockenspiel

• Made of horizontal steel bars arranged ladder-like in two parallel rows.

• Played by striking the bars with a mallet giving the sound of little bells

Xylophone • Made of wooden bars• Played by striking with rubber or

wooden beaters using wrist movement.

Timpani or kettle drum• Large copper bowl with a drumhead made of

calfskin or plastic stretched across the top.

• Struck with mallets or felt-tipped wooden sticks

B. Non-Pitch percussion instruments

Drum • Made of plastic, metal or steel with a

drumhead made of plastic or calfskin head. • Played by striking the beater.

Tambourine • Made of circular wooden frame with plastic

or skin drumheads and several pairs of jingles spaced around the frame

• Played by the striking the head or shaking the frame

Cymbals

• Made of a pair of round metal plated brass held by leather straps loops • Hand cymbals- played by striking the pair together or in a sliding manner.• Finger cymbals- played by holding a loop between the thumb and forefingers

and ringing one cymbal against the other or clashing them together.

Maracas • Made of wooden or plastic spheres with

seeds or rattlers .• Played by shaking with a wrist motion. • Shake sharply to produce a clear sound or

shake continuously for a sustained sound.

Triangle • Made of steel formed into triangle with

one corner open, suspended by a string or cord loop.

• Played with striking metal beater.

Castanets• Made of castaña (chestnut) tree and consist of two pieces of wood shaped like a

bowl of a spoon, held together by a cord • Played by hand, castanets are held up clicking on the air with a whip like motion

and struck against the palm or leg.

Wood block

• Made of rectangular block of hardwood with a slit cut parallel to the long edge.

• Played by striking lightly with a wooden tipped mallet.

Sand block • Made of wooden block covered with a

sandpaper and mounted with knob.• Played by rubbing the two blocks back

and forth using different pressure and speed.

Claves• Made of wood.• Played by striking or rubbing one stick against

the other in a loose but firm manner.

Egg shaker • Plastic egg-shaped container full of small, loose

seeds or beads.• Played by shaking which creates the percussive

sounds • Has a whirling sound

Rhythm sticks• plain sticks or notched ones.• Played by tapping together to have that classic warm

wood sound.
