THE PRAYER BOOK’S LENTEN INVITATION Dear People of God:
The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and
resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of
penitence and fasting.
This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy
Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated
from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to
the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the
message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need
which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-
examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and
meditating on God's holy Word. The Book of Common Prayer, p. 264
Next week, on Wednesday, March 5th, we begin the season of Lent with two services of The
Imposition of Ashes and Holy Eucharist at 12:10 and 6 pm. Please join us as we begin our
Lenten journey together.
Peace,
Rector’s Reflections
I NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT WE SING by Jan Wubbena You may recall that last month I spoke of how often we miss the opportunity to truly grasp a hymn
text’s content because we mindlessly sing the hymns each Sunday. Our hymns have been carefully
chosen to reinforce the Propers for that Sunday, both in a general sense and sometimes also with
phrases or imagery drawn directly from one of the lessons, yet we miss the connection between
the Word for the day and the hymns. Perhaps we are struggling with an unfamiliar tune, perhaps
the hymn is so familiar that we scarcely need to read it from the hymnal, so we can just “zone out,”
or perhaps we are thinking about having to get milk on the way home.
Musicians may have other distractions too. I take great delight in analyzing a hymn’s harmonic
progression (the more sophisticated, the better). Also, I have been known to sing the tenor on a
particular line because it is a great line, then moving to the alto for a measure or two because the
altos do something especially interesting, and so forth. This is what I term “recreational singing.”
It’s rewarding for a musician – but it’s not intentional worship.
“I need to pay attention to what we sing. But how can I? What are some practical steps I might
take to pay attention to the hymn text?”
On the rare occasions when I have taught a course with a hymnology component, I require the
students to copy out the entire text of the hymns we study in the course as poetry. Hymn texts
usually precede the tunes with which they are associated – they are written as poetry, and when
the students commit the assigned hymn texts to paper this way, they again look like poetry. The
students subsequently write a short mediation with commentary on each stanza, each line – much
easier to do than when the text is integrated with the tune.
Every time the choir sings an anthem new to our repertoire, I copy out the text so that Bay might
copy-and-paste it into the bulletin. When the text is metrical poetry, I try to imagine how the poet
formatted it on the page – perhaps in quatrains? – where he might have indented lines to reinforce
the rhyme scheme, and such, and then doing that in the bulletin copy. When doing this, I study
the text in a way quite different from my experience with it during choir rehearsal, when the music
is there on music rack in front of me and I am playing parts as we learn the notes. I stop short of
writing a personal reflection about the meaning of the text’s content – but you get the idea. I have
made a conscious effort to familiarize myself with the text in a manner quite different from singing
it from a printed format very different from the author’s conception when composing the text.
A second idea – and here I would ask for some input from you. In each week’s Monday Miscellany
– in the distribution list’s inbox by Monday afternoon – Hope lists the Propers for the following
Sunday. It wouldn’t be that difficult to include also the hymn numbers for the benefit of any who
might want to study the hymn texts as well as the lessons before coming to church the following
Sunday. This kind of study would bring a new dimension to your daily devotional life. Speak up,
please, if you think this would be a useful addition or our Monday Miscellany.
Finally, next month I’ll share some thoughts about what you might do after you arrive at church for
the service. To be continued….
