Gothic Romanesque

Differences between Gothic and Romanesque

Gothic

• The Gothic architecture started in the 12th century

• The Gothic buildings where to made to look like you where heaven • They were bright and colorful

• Gothic buildings had thick walls, it was difficult to make huge and numerous windows

Gothic (cont.)

• The main difference Gothic had flying buttresses

• Gothic had big windows with stained glass to let in light

Romanesque

• Was founded in the 9th and 12th century

• The word “Romanesque” came in the 1800s because it is a barrel vault feature which looked like the classical Roman arch.

• Romanesque church were solid and had heavy thick walls

Romanesque (cont.)

• The buildings had small windows and dimly lit rooms

• The buildings had blunt towers

Center is Gothic and outside is Romanesque
