What are the Global Trends?

❑ 5 top East Asian nations perform at a significantly higher level than the rest. While culturally and educationally diverse they all focus on mastery as an educational goal.

❑ Over time, there has been a general improvement in pupils performance in maths.

❑ There is a narrowing of the gap between the highest and lowest attainers largely explained by improvements by struggling learners.

❑ Nations show a higher performance in TIMMS than PISA

❑ There are still challenges: • Pupils are generally better at applying curriculum knowledge (TIMSS) than
