Target Audience: 4-H club/group members ages 8 – 19.

• provide 4-H clubs/groups with ready-to-use materials• promote healthy lifestyles through physical fitness and healthy eating• provide youth leaders the opportunity to teach and model behavior with their peers• provide fun, easy-to-use activities for club programs• increase the number of minutes spent in physical activity for participants to average at least 60 minutes each day• encourage healthy snacks at club/group meetings

Objectives:

Building on USDA’s “Move It! Activity pyramid, 4-H leaders were encouraged to educate youth about the importance of achieving 60 minutes of moderate activity each day. Youth were encouraged to track minutes of daily physical activity and compete with other club members.

• Leader Activity Guide: includes program activities, roll call suggestions, ties to other 4-H projects and ideas for community involvement.

• Physical Activity Calendar (for youth): Monthly calendar with space to record number of minutes of physical activity each day, space to total minutes weekly and monthly. An additional educational activity is included each month.

Children’s Food Choices

• 2% of American children choose foods consistent with the Dietary Guidelines

• 45% of elementary children eat less than 1 serving of fruit and 20% eat less than 1 serving of vegetables

• 1/4 of all vegetables eaten by children are French fries

• More than 1/2 of American children do not consume recommended servings of grains

• 56 to 85 percent of children (depending on age and gender) consume soft drinks on any given day.

• National Cancer Institute finds that overweight kids tend to consume more of their calories as soft drinks.

• Recipe for a healthy snack for refreshments. (May be seasonal or tied to monthly theme.)M
