General Chemistry

• Mrs Rose Marie Capanema

What is Chemistry ?

• Chemistry is the study of matter ; their properties, structure, and the changes they undergo.

caffeine

Caffeine exhibits a number of biological effects resulting from its diuretic and stimulant properties.

Research has shown that some sensitive individuals experience side effects such as insomnia, headaches, irritability and nervousness.

What is matter ?

• Anything that has mass and occupies space.

• What are the three main physical states of matter? (KE and PE)

Physical X Chemical Change

Physical changes are those changes that do not result in the production of a new substance.

If you melt a block of ice, you still have H2O at the end of the change.

If you break a bottle, you still have glass.  Painting a piece of wood will not make it stop being wood.

Common examples :melting, freezing, condensing, breaking, crushing, cutting, and bending.

Chemical changes, or chemical reactions, are changes that result in the production of another substance.

When you burn a log in a fireplace, you are carrying out a chemical reaction that releases carbon.

When you light your Bunsen burner in lab, you are carrying out a chemical reaction that produces water and carbon dioxide.

Common examples :digestion, respiration, photosynthesis, burning, and decomposition.

Anything with mass and volume.

• Substance Matter with constant composition

• MixtureMatter with variable composition

• ElementSubstance made up of only one type of atom

• CompoundTwo or more elements that are chemically combined

• Heterogeneous MixtureMixtures that are made up of more than one phase

• Homogeneous MixturesAlso called solutions.  Mixtures that are made up of only one phase

DemoMagnesium is one of the most important component of fireworks.

Alchemy• Alchemists searched for a way to transform

impure elements such as lead into pure gold.• http://www.alshindagah.com/julaug2005/gold.html

• Is it possible to change copper into silver and then into gold?

The copper face shows how the statue would look like if the

copper was not oxidized.
