DESCRIPTION

In this chapter, Lord Krishna reveals his cosmic form to Arjuna. Arjuna describes the all encompassing form of God & upon questioning was told that the present form is that of the destroyer of the world.

Arjuna loses his heart and refuses to fight his teachers and relatives, and Krishna revives him by his wise words of wisdom.

Behold then, Arjuna, hundreds of My forms, nay, thousands, varied, divine, variously coloured & shaped.

If in the firmament, i.e. in the sky, the simultaneous splendour of a thousand suns were to explode, it will have a semblance to that of that mighty cosmic form.

Then, filled with amazement & with hairs standing on end, Arjuna spoke to the Lord, his head bent & hands folded

Lord! In Your body I see all gods, as also groups of contingent beings, the mighty Brahma seated in the lotus, all the seers, & all the celestial serpents.

I behold You with many hands, bellies, faces, & eyes, with a form infinite in all directions. I see no end, middle or beginning for You, the Lord of the Universe

Even without you, these warriors marshalled in these opposing forces will cease to be.

This form of Mine, extremely hard to behold, which you have seen, even the gods perpetually crave to see.

Not by the Vedas, nor by penance, nor by gifts, nor by sacrifice, may I be seen thus, as you have.

Valiant Arjuna, only through single-minded devotion My Universal Form can be seen, known in essence, and even merge with me.

Arjuna, he who performs all his duties for My sake, depends on Me, is devoted to Me, & who is free from attachment & malice towards all beings, surely merges with Me.
