GANG HISTORY

Gangs first in Salem began in the 1980’s.

Representation from every racial, cultural and most

socio-economic groups

Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, Skinheads, Asian Gangs,

Indian Gangs, African American and Hispanic style

GANG HISTORY

At different times each of these gangs has been

more visible and active than others.

In 2018 the Hispanic styled youth gangs are the most

visible and active.

Some formed to acquire power

West Side Mafia Crips (WSM) started

Asian Pride Only was formed to counter WSM

WSM, APO and 18th St gang members all started

having conflicts

1998 - Most violent year for gangs in Salem/Marion

County

Eleven gang related homicides, as well as numerous drive by shootings and assaults

Nearly all these events had an impact on area schools

1999 - Interagency gang team formed

2002-2005 - Gang growth slowed and was much less visible

2005 - Increase of self admitted gang members

2006-2018 - New members recruited as older members are incarcerated, drop out
