Friends United Meeting commits itself to energize and equip Friends through the power of the Holy Spirit to gather people into fellowships where Jesus Christ is known, loved and obeyed as teacher and Lord. We do that work through church, mission, health care and school organizations in partnerships with our global Friends.

In Ramallah Joyce Ajlouny

Joyce is a Palestinian-American Quaker and a graduate of Ramallah Friends Schools. Her husband Ziad works for a foundation that funds charitable projects. They have three sons: Tareq, Nader, and Ramzi.

Living under occupation

Joyce’s family is Palestinian and has endured the same limitations as other Palestinians. They are not allowed to go to Jerusalem, only 10 miles away, or travel freely in their country. They often hear gunfire at night and experience curfews.

Director -Ramallah Friends Schools

Joyce has served as director of Ramallah Friends Schools since 2005. She deserves credit for many improvements to the school such as:

Education of children with special needs

Improvement in facilities with ASHA grants

Strengthened curriculum that now offers an International Baccalaureate program

Alumni relations and fundraising

The only school accepting children with special needs is RFS.

Christian Quaker Values are modeled by staff and taught in Ethics Classes.

Though a small group, Ramallah Friends Meeting and Joyce often host international visitors.

Joyce manages USAid/ASHA grants for RFS. ASHA = American Schools & Hospitals Abroad

Ann Riggs Friends Theological College

In her second year as principal of Friends Theological College in Kenya, Ann Riggs is practicing her faith by helping African pastors develop their leadership skills.

She is advancing FTC in many ways.

Friends Theological College

Evangelism through worship, teaching & preaching is what it’s all about. FTC prepares pastors for some of the 2000 Friends churches in Kenya and beyond. Now there are students from Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda. Meet Sammy, FTC’s first student from the Samburu Mission.

Lon Fendall Friends Theological College

Lon Fendall, now retired from George Fox University, is serving as Academic Consultant to assist Ann in the process of accreditation, improve curriculum, and plan & implement staff development. He makes three trips per year to do that work.

At FTC Lon and Raelene Fendall

Lon and his wife Raelene had planned to move to Kenya for Lon to serve as FTC principal, but the plans were changed when their daughter passed away last year. Now they have taken on the role of parents for three grandchildren so they are not free to live in Kaimosi as yet. Thus, his decision to serve as Academic Consultant.

Raelene’s specialty is library technology, so during their January 2011 trip, she was delighted to work with FTC students in the conversion of the library from the Dewey system to the IL system.

Eden Grace Africa Ministries Office

Eden, her husband James and two sons, Isaiah and Jesse, have lived in Kisumu for six years. Kisumu is a central location for the sixteen yearly meetings served by the Africa Ministries Office. The boys attend an international school that is within walking distance of the Graces’ home.James is a computer expert working with HIV/Aids treatment centers in Kenya.

Eden works with John Muhanji and Judith Ngoya in the Africa Ministries Office to manage the finances, arrange for visitors and work with FUM Partner Projects.

Eden serves on the HOSPITAL board AND on the management team.

Secondary projects are managed by Kenyan yearly meetings and FUM participates with financial donations. Eden disperses funds appropriately to these. FRIENDS CHURCH PEACE TEAM

LINDI FRIENDS SCHOOL IN THE KIBERA SLUM OF NAIROBI

Eden manages all FUM funds going to the partner projects.

NEW BEDS & EQUIPMENT

Serving on your behalf, Eden is our constant link to our African ministries.

Most people overlook the need to support our Field Staff.

Donations to projects, like the purchase of a goat herd, water filters, bicycles, and support for the peace curriculum and scholarships are necessary, but NONE of this could happen without staff to manage it. Most of our staff ministry accounts are underfunded. And FUM has asked the Field Staff to build relationships with donors and raise their own support. Please consider how you can contribute regularly to assist our staff.
