Pride has a fall
Once upon a time, there was a famous sculptor. His sculptors looked like real ones. One day he saw a dream that after fifteen days, the demon of death would come to take him.
The sculptor wanted to avoid death. He prepared nine statues of himself and when he heard the demon of death coming, he took place between the nine statues.
The demon could not recognize the real sculptor and was astonished to see ten sculptors instead of one and rushed back to the Lord of Death.
The Lord of Death was annoyed and went himself to take the real sculptor.
The sculptor was alert and stood motionless. The Lord of Death also got perplexed initially but after some time he thought for a moment and uttered these words. “Mr. Sculptor, these creations would have been perfect but for one mistake.”
The real sculptor was not prepared to listen to criticism of his creation and came out and asked the Lord of Death “Where is the fault?” Here is the fault, said the Lord of Death and caught hold of the real sculptor.
Actually there was no fault in his creations but the sculptor was caught because of his pride.
Moral: Pride has a fall.

TECHNO-TALK ADVANTAGES OF USING VFD
As compared with the other methods of motor speed control, usage of VFD offers several advantages.
1. Energy Saving:
When used in conjunction with pumps and fans, VFD turns out to be the most efficient means of speed control. As per the Law of Affinity, motor speed is directly proportional to the flow of current, torque is directly proportional to square of speed change & horse power is directly proportional to cube of speed change.
Thus when speed of the motor is reduced, corresponding horse power requirements fall of considerably. Also VFD acts like inrush current limiter as it acts like reduced voltage starter. A motor directly energized from line supply draws as high as 600% inrush current. The same motor when energized through VFD, draws less than 150% inrush current. Thus considerable amount of energy saving is achieved when VFD is used for speed control applications.
2. Improved Process Control:
A VFD can be used for control of process temperature, pressure, or flow without the use of a separate controller. Suitable sensors and electronics are used to interface the driven equipment with the VFD.
By virtue of having better interface capabilities, VFD ensure quick and efficient process control. VFD receives input for Start/Stop, Speed Control & Output signals & subsequently sends command signal to PLC/DCS/PC. The other types of speed control mechanisms have much limited interface capabilities as compared with VFD.
3. Quick Bypass Capabilities:
VFD can very easily be bypassed in case such need arises. Other speed control devices are physically coupled with load. Hence whenever there is a failure in such speed control device, they have to be physically disconnected from load. In case of VFD, bypass mechanism is very quick and easy through rapid disconnection of VFD through switch gears and connection of alternate starter.
4. Multi Motor Control:
As compared with other types of speed controllers, VFD is capable of driving and controlling multiple motors. Users can utilize multi-motor applications, such as pumps or fans, with one control unit.
5. Lower System Maintenance:
Lower maintenance costs, as lower operating speeds result in longer life for bearings and motors. Use of VFD ensures considerable reduction in wear & tear of Belts, Sheaves, Gear Boxes & Couplings.
VFD achieves this feat by controlling speed of the motor while avoiding repeated On/Off of the motor. Thus repeated inrush & torque pulsations are brought under control.
6. No requirement of Starter:
Motors can be directly driven by VFD. Separate starter is not required as is the case with other motor speed control devices.
7. Improved Life Of Motor:
When energized directly from mains supply, motors draw very high inrush current. This results in excessive heating of motor windings. The life of motor reduces.
Use of VFD ensures considerably lower amount of inrush current resulting in much reduced heating of motor windings and longevity of motor life.
8. Reduced Burden on supply:
When energized directly from mains supply, motors draw very high inrush current. This results in excessive drop in supply voltage and subsequent tripping of electronic equipment connected across the same line.
As VFD ensures much reduced inrush current drawn by motor, drop in supply voltage reduces considerably. Thus undesirable power line disturbances are avoided
9. General:
Apart from the advantages mentioned above, VFD by virtue of their built in characteristic also offer smooth starting, smooth acceleration/deceleration, reverse operation, controlled stopping, improved power factor, cost savings etc.

(Without drive) : 290 kW 93 % Open
Present system
(With drive) : 262 kW 100 % Open
System block diagram :
Merits of new system : 1. Easy & smooth operation.
2. Energy saving due to flow control by VFD.
Economical analysis :
Energy consumption without VFD - P1 = 290 kW
Energy consumption with VFD - P2 = 262 kW
Energy saving per day ((P1 - P2) x 24) = 672 Units
Saving per day @ Rs. 5/- Unit = Rs. 3360/-
Saving per year (Approx. 320 Days) = Rs. 10,75,200/-
