PURPOSE OF THE PASS PROGRAM
• Reduce the dropout rate
• Increase the re-entry and retention rate
• Address academic and non-academic risk
factors for students who are under credited
by one year or less
Three PASS programs
• PASS Daytime Credit Recovery
• PASS Extended Day Credit Recovery
• PASS Institute Drop-out Re-engagement
Daytime Credit
Recovery
• Current Marshall
students needing to
recover credits
• Online instruction for 1-
2 class periods each
day
Extended Day Credit Recovery
• Students needing to recover credits take
online courses from 2:45 - 7:00 p.m. daily
• Participants include students from Marshall
and other Chicago high schools as well as
dropouts who work during the day and must
attend the evening program, rather than the
Institute Drop-out Re-engagement program
PASS Institute Drop-out Re-engagement
• Students come from all over the city
• Three seven-hour sessions per day
• Emphasis on helping students be successful
INTERVENTIONS IN FOUR AREAS
• Identification and diagnosis
• Effective and relevant instruction
• Behavioral interventions and social supports
• Student, family, and community involvement.
Key practices
• Relationships: Students develop strong
relationships with PASS staff members
• Peer-to-Peer mentoring: PASS students
develop a sense of community and self-worth
when they mentor another PASS student.
Key practices
• FuelEd online courses: Comprehensive and
rigorous courses enable students to work at
their own pace; discover their own learning
preferences, strengths, and weaknesses.
• Wraparound services: The support,
services, and individual attention that PASS
students receive is critical for helping them
mature and achieve academic success.
Success stories
I had trouble in school because I had bad
attendance, bad behavior, and then I had a baby. I
stopped coming to school because I did not feel
good. PASS has helped me monitor my classes and
PASS is good for the kids that are willing to
accomplish their goal and kids that want to make it
somewhere. The PASS program has helped students
to finish classes and go to college.
-Kadeeshia L.
I used to have trouble at school because I had way
too many arguments and fights. But one of the main
reasons I stopped coming to school was because I
was pregnant and had no transportation. I lost all my
ambition and inspiration for school which made me
give up. I actually love school because I want to
further my education, even after high school. PASS
has helped me a lot because I am more focused up
here and things that distracted me before do not up
here. I feel like the kids in PASS are motivated,
responsible, and dedicated to school. PASS gives
students a chance to try again and it gives students
ambition and help some to graduate!
