Friendly Connections From the Roseville Public Library
From the Director
At least once every couple of weeks someone asks me about the state of public
libraries. It usually goes something like this, “Boy, libraries must be really different
places these days because of computers,” or “Do people actually use libraries anymore
because I get all of my (fill in the blank – eBooks, movies, music) online?” I look at the
question as a good way to educate someone who doesn’t normally use public
libraries on their importance. I stress that, while libraries are different from what
they were twenty or thirty years ago, so are most organizations. The world is a
different place in many respects and so are local communities. But “different” isn’t
always worse. Different is just different.
The Roseville Public Library receives strong support from the residents. “Yes” votes
were the majority in last summer’s millage proposal and this type of support is
reflected in most Michigan communities. With the support of the Library trustees,
our employees are using the increased revenue to give residents more of what they
want. We are increasing the size of every collection in the library and adding new
collections. We just added a book discussion kit collection for those who want to
start their own book groups and we have a popular collection called “Lucky Day.”
You may find a copy of an in-demand book, movie or music CD on the shelf that you
can check out for a shorter loan period – skipping the line of people waiting. We
purchased iPads for children and teens in the Youth Area. We will take the next few
years to upgrade the interior and exterior of the building and are currently working
with a designer to redesign the Library’s south entrance, not only making it look
more attractive, but keeping mounds of snow from falling on people’s heads in the
winter. Each month you will see something new. In addition to “things,” we will
continue to increase the number and variety of programs we offer, making sure that
the Library remains an important community resource for Roseville.
Your public library truly does offer something for everyone. Please stop by and
look around, ask a question, join a program, scan a photo, check out a book, or
use a computer. After all, it’s your community space.

Friends of the Library Autumn Used Book Sale Thursday, October 26, 2:00 - 7:30 PM
Friday, October 27, 12:00 - 4:00 PM
Saturday, October 28, 12:00 - 4:00 PM
The Friends have two large used book sales each year in the spring and autumn. The revenue from the used
book sales is their primary source of income each year and they make generous donations to the Library for
materials, equipment and programs. This year the Friends paid for half of the new document/book/photo
scanner, multiple copies of book discussion titles, the newsletter and programs.
The Friends need assistance setting up and breaking down the book sale area. On Tuesday, October 24 they
need help bringing boxes of books up from the basement using carts and the elevator, and sorting books onto
tables. On Monday, October 30 they will need help taking unsold books back to the basement. They also need
help putting some lawn signs around the City Hall campus advertising the sale. You don’t have to be a member
to assist with the sale. Please contact the Library if you have a couple of hours to help. The Friends also need
paper grocery bags for their used book sale. They can be dropped off at the library anytime before the sale.
Thank you!

Internet Browsers - Secure vs. Not Secure
You may have noticed some Internet browsers now have a secure or not secure box
next to the web address. For example, our web address, rosevillelibrary.org says
not secure, but your email website will likely say secure. Websites that use HTTPS
(HyperText Transfer Protocol with Secure Sockets Layer) mask information so that
it can not be viewed publicly. Alternately, there is HTTP (hypertext transfer
protocol) which is the language used over public channels.
One may think of HTTPS as form of communication in code. In order for one to obtain your information they
would have to break the code. HTTP could be viewed as a discreet conversation in a coffee shop. While it is
quiet, one could hear your conversation if they really wanted to do so. As the library’s website does not
request personal information, an insecure website will not impact your experience. All web pages requiring
confidential information such as your library card use secure technology to protect your privacy and
information.
