Wellness tip: Don’t forget your flu shot! An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and lessen the chance that you will
spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, the flu is less likely to spread throughout the community.
Signs and symptoms of the flu: fever, chills, cough, body aches, dry hacking cough, moderate to high fever (note not everyone with the flu
will run a fever), sore throat and shaking chills, severe muscle or body aches, headache, stuffy and runny nose and profound fever (may last
up to 2 weeks).
Reasons to get the flu shot:
Smart phones/devices- you use these all the time, touching it, holding it to your face, taking it everywhere you go and others are touching
it. Your smart device is a germ magnet! The only way to protect yourself from your flu harboring device is to get vaccinated.
It is usually free (or really cheap) to get vaccinated. It is covered by most insurances but if no insurance expect to pay $20.
The vaccine will not give you the flu. It takes 1-2 weeks for the vaccine to be effective if you are sick before that it was something already in
your system.
The flu vaccine might spare a heart attack. A study published in JAMA found an adult who had their flu shot was 36% less likely to suffer a
heart attack or a stroke within the next year, compared to those who weren’t vaccinated. Influenza causes inflammation throughout your
whole body. This can cause plaque that’s built up in your arteries to dislodge and form blood clots. Blood clots can lead to heart attack or
stroke.
You will save sick days. An estimated 111 million workdays are lost to flu each year. Your coworker/classmates will not want you around if
you are sick with flu like symptoms. Working or studying from home when sick is not very productive.
It will help Babies, elderly and people with comprised immune systems to stay healthier if you are healthier. They are more susceptible to
influenza and may not be able to get the flu vaccine.
Pay it forward by keeping others healthy protect you so they stay healthy.
