Middle school staff,students sing praises
of Elvis custodianAKA Scott Balke
SYDNEY BRINK/DEMOCRATScott Balke, a SedaliaMiddle School custodian, has beennamed theSedalia SchoolDistrict 200Associate of the Year by the Sedalia Com-munity Educators Association.
If you get to hear custo-dian Scott Balke’s ElvisPresley impersonation, con-sider yourself fortunate.“That’s only for my clos-
est friends,” he said, with agrin. But just seconds later, in
the main office at SedaliaMiddle School, he beltedout, “Well, since my moppyleft me,” to the tune of“Heartbreak Hotel.”“He’s really pretty good,”
said administrative assistantKaren Benson. “We’re luckyto have him here.”Balke feels fortunate to be
there and to have beennamed the Sedalia Commu-nity Educators AssociationAssociate of the Year for2012. He received the honorMonday afternoon during theSCEAwinter meeting at theHeckart Performing ArtsCenter at Smith-Cotton HighSchool.Balke said he was sur-
prised enough when he wasnamed the middle school’soutstanding associate, butwas overwhelmed when hewon the district honor.Chris Pyle, assistant prin-
cipal at the middle school, said: “We were very happyfor him. We feel he is verydeserving. He always giveshis best, and is the kind ofemployee you would hope tohave — not only for staff, but for students, as well.”The students’ reactions
are what hit home most forBalke. He said they streamedup to congratulate him andtell him “you’re the best cus-todian.”“That was very reward-
ing,” he said. “It’s great toknow you are making a dif-ference in kids’ lives. If thestaff and kids think a lot ofyou, you are doing some-thing right.Balke’s dedication to the
building’s students is whatprompted administrative as-sistant Phelessia Hughes towrite the letter nominatinghim for the honor.“That man goes above
and beyond for these stu-dents. He never hesitates to
help a child,” she said. “Hetries to learn all of the stu-dents’ names, he wants tomake them feel important. Ilove that about him.”Balke has been at the mid-
dle school for two years, after working at both old andnew Smith-Cotton HighSchool buildings and atParkview Elementary. Hehas enjoyed the chance tomove around in the district, since it has given him the op-portunity to meet more peo-ple.His busiest time of day is
during the school’s six lunchperiods, as he emptiesquickly filling trash cans andwipes down tables.Hughes said Balke cleans
up any mess a person canimagine without ever com-plaining, and when sum-moned to deal with such anissue he always says, “I’ll beright there.”Pyle said Balke takes a lot
of pride in his job.“Mr. Balke and (head cus-
todian Jeanie Mosier), aswell, are the first ones inbuilding in the morning, andthey make sure our buildingis safe for us to start.” Pylesaid. “During the day as is-sues arise ... he is the firstperson we call to keep run-ning a safe school.”Hughes said Balke has
made a positive impressionin his short time in at themiddle school, in largemeasure due to his “cheerfulheart.”Balke admitted that in
some places, the custodianposition is looked down on.But not at Sedalia MiddleSchool, where the studentsget to know them; Balke saidhe has even had studentsshow him their grade cardsso they could share their suc-cesses with him.Balke has three children
who attend school in Stover. He keeps them in mind as hedoes his job at the middleschool.“I keep it as clean as I
would want it to be if theywere going to school here,”he said.
