Urban Conservation and Project AWAKE’s Annual Plant Sale
Urban Conservation is one the newest endeavors for many homeown-ers. Urban conservation is simply taking the conservation practices that we currently implement on our farms, state parks, and wildlife areas and applying them to an urban setting or in our own backyard. The goals of such conservation programs vary greatly from city to city, but mostly focus on decreasing runoff and soil erosion, protecting water supplies, promoting wildlife, and improving the ascetic value of the city. Many practices are being implemented in cities and town around central Iowa. Project AWAKE, a local nonprofit group in Newton, has been a leader in the urban conservation efforts for over 20 years. The accomplishments of AWAKE include planting 100s of trees like the crabapples along West First Ave in Newton, maintaining numerous community flowerbeds like the one found at the entrance of Maytag Park, and establishing the New-ton Arboretum and the Krumm Horticulture Learning Center.
Project AWAKE is a nonprofit group, so they rely entirely on support from the public to continue their efforts. Their main fundraiser each year is the annual plant sale. This year’s plant sale will be Saturday May 8, from 8:00am until Noon at the Arboretum, 3000 N. 4th Ave. E Newton. At the plant sale, you will find a variety of annuals, perennials, and or-namentals that will be a great addition to your yard. Individuals want-ing to donate plants for the sale can do so until Thursday, May 6. Plants may be dropped off at the Arboretum. If you cannot attend the plant sale, AWAKE is always looking for new donors and volunteers that are pas-sionate about urban conservation. For information about the plant sale, call 791-3021.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
How Much Exercise Do Adults Need?DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is the amount of exercise recommended for a man or woman of 55? I was always under the impression that 15 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week was a sufficient amount of time for heart health. Am I wrong? -- R.K.
ANSWER: That used to be the recommended amount of exercise time for an adult. For readers, aerobic exercise is the kind of exercise that is tailored for the heart. It’s exercise that employs the continuous use of large muscles for a somewhat protracted period of time, at least 10 minutes. Jogging, biking, walking, swimming and dancing are examples of aerobic exercise. The latest advice for adults, if their doctors say they are fit enough to exercise, is to get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week. That’s 20 minutes of exercise seven days a week or 50 minutes, three times a week. You can divide it any way you wish, but the minimum amount of one session of exercise has to be 10 min-utes. If you are a novice, take your time to reach 10 minutes. A single session can be longer if you choose.Moderate-intensity exercise is walking at a pace of 3.5 miles an hour, a brisk walk.Or if you want to devote less time to exercise, you can if you make it vigorous exercise. Vigorous exercise for 75 minutes a week fulfills the requirement for heart health. If you’re up to it and if you want even greater results, double those times -- 300 minutes of moderate exercise a week or 150 minutes of vigorous exercise a week. I want to issue the warning again. Get doctor approval for any of this. Strength-training exercise -- weightlifting -- also is strongly recommended for all adults regardless of age.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta
Spot-Cleaning a CarpetQ: I held a barbecue at my new apartment last weekend, and I found out afterward that a few drinks were spilled on the living-room carpet and some food was dropped as well. I cleaned up as best as I could, but there are still spots where the spills occurred. How can I get rid of these stains? -- Abigail G., Carrollton, Ga.
A: Carpet stains can be difficult to completely eradicate, even if you are able to tackle them immediately after a spill. Commercial products are available to help, but you’ve got to purchase the right product for the task and use it exactly as instructed, or the problem may get worse. Here’s a few common tips on cleaning spills and stains.• Blot up liquid spills, don’t rub them. Rubbing will just grind the liquid deeper into the carpet and padding.• Pick up food spills and gently lift stuck-on food from the carpet fibers using a blunt tool like a spoon.• Vacuum up dried food particles, then blot the spill area with a damp cloth to loosen and remove stains.• Coffee stains can be tackled with warm water and white vinegar: dip a clean cloth in the water and dab onto the stain, then dab vin-egar on. Blot up, then repeat until the stain is gone.• Red wine can be blotted up and the area rinsed with club soda -- if done immediately after the spill. Dried red wine should be re-moistened by dabbing on white wine or vinegar and blotting up; repeat as often as necessary.• Other stains, like chocolate or Kool-Aid, may come up if you dab the area with a solution of 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid (Dawn or Joy) to 1 cup of warm water, let sit for about 15 minutes and then blot up with a clean cloth; repeat until the stain is gone. Dab the area with white vinegar to remove the detergent. If home remedies don’t work, head for a home improvement or carpet store and ask for advice and products that address exactly the type of stain you’re dealing with.
HOME TIP: Patience and persistence are needed to get older stains out of a carpet. Never resort to scrubbing or rubbing a stain, as this will damage the fibers and can push the stain deeper into the carpet and padding.
