Impact of Mindset on Performance

How to Foster a Growth Mindset

Praise & recognize effort, not achievement

Assist in how your learner deals with a setback

• The problem isn’t the “world” around them or others that need to change

Value:

• Potential

• Capacity

• Passion for Learning

(Rather than past accomplishments)

The Learning Environment: Fostering a Growth Mindset

What did you learn today?

• Present skills as learnable

What mistake did you make that taught you something?

• Give feedback in a way that promotes learning and future success

What did you try hard at today?

• Convey that we value learning and perseverance, not just natural-born talent

Fostering a Growth Mindset- Role of the Teacher

What does it take to win your approval?

Do you believe “good residents” should just “act good?”

• Changing from a “judge and be judged” to a “learn and help learn framework”

How do you praise or criticize your learner?

• What do you say or do when they make a mistake or when something goes wrong?

Giving Feedback

Assess whether resident is in a fixed or growth mindset

Give corrective feedback

Acknowledge we all make mistakes as we learn, the key is to use them to improve

How can we use this as a learning opportunity?

What did you learn from this experience?

What parts of this case were difficult?

Mindset Milestones

What kind of mindsets are portrayed?

Reflection

Assessing your learners and their mindset can help unleash their potential
