FORMULA SAECOMPOSITE MONOCOQUE TEAM
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Team Members: Peter Creveling, Todd Critchlow, Nick Crocker, Eric Green, and Ben O’Harra
Team Advisor: Dr. Drake
Introduction: Formula SAE (FSAE) is a world-renowned collegiate design competition that allows engineering students an opportunity to gain valuable experience designing, engineering, and fabricating an open-wheel racecar. The Monocoque team this year was focused on designing a high performance carbon fiber body that is can be easily
manufactured for future teams.
Objectives:• Build a chassis that is stiffer and
stronger than previous University of Utah Formula SAE chassis to meet SAE strength requirements
• Develop design, analysis, and manufacturing processes that future teams can use to compete in the FSAE series
• Meet specific development costs while maintaining important packaging and safety requirements
• Develop solid partnerships with local companies in order to create a healthy, lasting relationship with Utah’s massive composites industry
Mold Design: Steps towards making new molds. • Make new fiberglass male buck from
old foam molds• Design a female fiberglass mold from
the buck• Lay up carbon fiber inside female mold
to create the final chassis
Carbon Fiber Design:• CompositePro and mechanical testing to
develop sandwich composite quasi-isotropic layup
• Side Impact section (red):• 8 plies, 1.5 inch core
• Body section (blue):• 5 plies, 0.75 inch core
