Blessed with God’s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity.
By Jesus Christ’s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.
+ + +
God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy.
As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.
*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison.
Prelude My Jesus, I Love Thee arr. Kartsonakis Chiming of the Hour Welcome
Introit
When the morning stars together their Creator's glory sang, And the angel host all shouted till with joy the heavens rang, Then your wisdom and your greatness their exultant music told, All the beauty and the splendor which your mighty works unfold. (hymn 689)
*Call to Worship (from Psalm 119)
Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep God’s decrees, who seek the Lord with their whole heart. Teach us your statutes, O God, all the ordinances of your mouth. Then we shall delight in the way of your decrees as much as in all riches.
*Hymn 386 Come, Worship God
*Invitation to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
Almighty God, with each new day you call us to love and serve you by loving and serving others. Yet with each new day we fail your call. We seek goals different from yours. We shout peace, but we practice violence. We speak justice, but we do injustice. We walk away, rather than stepping forward. Turn us around, Lord. Give us words of compassion when we most need them. Move us to deeds of mercy when we would rather choose otherwise, all for the sake of Jesus Christ, who showed us how to live as your people in this world…. (time for silent confession)
And let God’s people say: Amen.
*Assurance of Forgiveness

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed (traditional version)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Call to Prayer
'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, ‘Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the place just right, It will be in the valley of love and delight. When true simplicity is gained, to bow and to bend, we will not be ashamed, To turn, turn will be our delight, ‘til by turning, turning we come round right.

Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version) {
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES
During this season of Epiphany we celebrate
God’s self-revelation to the world in Jesus Christ.
Our worship theme is “Turn Round Right” (from
the song “Simple Gifts”), which highlights our
response to God’s self-revelation. The lectionary
passages for Epiphany highlight turning in some
way—turning from evil, turning direction, turning
the other cheek, turning the world upside down,
and so forth. Such turning doesn’t necessarily
involve a 180-degree course change, but is more
likely a matter of sharpening our focus and
shoring up around the edges of our lives, both
individually and as a congregation.
The text of today's anthem, Christus Paradox, was
written by Sylvia Dunstan in 1984, and appears
as hymn 274 in Glory to God. Her words call our
attention to the ways that various attributes and
images of Christ seem to be in tension, even
contradiction, with each other. The text is replete
with biblical allusions, notably Revelation 5:12,
"Worthy is the Lamb."

SMALL GREAT THINGS This afternoon, Anna Robinson,
Joe Gray, and Sharon begin a
three-week study of the #1 New
York Times bestseller Small
Great Things, by Jodi Picoult.
The novel tells the story of Ruth,
an African American labor-and-
delivery nurse, who is told not
to touch a newborn at the request of his white
supremacist parents. The baby goes into distress
while Ruth is alone with him in the nursery. What
she decides to do and the aftermath bring to light
the issues of prejudice, race, and justice. Anna
said, “This book comes closer than anything ever
has in helping me understand what it is like to be a
person of color in this country.” While it is helpful
to read the book in advance, it isn’t necessary. The
discussion begins at 1:00 p.m. in room 102.
Welcome to First Presbyterian Church (FPC)! No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. We hope you feel the love that is
present and our joy in having you with us. Please join us for refreshments in the fellowship hall following worship.
Nursery care is available in the Education building. Ask any of the ushers to direct you, if needed.
Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from the ushers.
Audio recordings of sermons and more information on FPC are at fpcor.org. Please call the church office
(483-1318) for audio recordings of the entire service.
The memorial service for Teresa
Myrick’s mother, Billie Tabor,
will be at 2:00 p.m., this Saturday,
Feb. 18, at First Cumberland
Presbyterian Church.
