Insurance Mandate Law

• According to the Autism Health Insurance Project (www.autismhealthinsurance.org) 39 states, including New Jersey, have laws which require insurers to provide behavioral treatment to young children with autism

• The laws vary from state to state in terms of exactly what is provided as far as hours, supervision, etc.

• You will need proof of an autism spectrum diagnosis and a prescription for ABA services from your doctor (neurologist or pediatrician)

• Call the member services number on your insurance card to get an explanation of benefits regarding ABA from your insurance company. Both Autism NJ and Children’s Specialized Hospital offer help navigating your insurance benefits

• Medicaid = Perform Care, however, Children’s Specialized has a grant to work with Medicaid patients

severe behavior problems
