Uniform Titles
Titles of Musical Works
…are not like titles of books they can vary in language, word order, etc. often a “Title” search won’t work for example, all these titles were found on different
scores and recordings of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony:Fifth symphony
Symphony no. 5
Symphony nr. 5
Symphony in C minor
Simfoniia no. 5
Symfoni nr. 5
Symphonies 3-5
Symphonies 5 & 9
Symphonie V
Ve symphonie
Symphonie n. 5
Symphonie no. 5
Uniform Titles
are added by our cataloguers when they put items into MORRIS
provide a predictable, uniform way to find musical works
e.g. the uniform title for Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is:
Beethoven, Ludwig van, 1770-1827. Symphonies, no. 5, op. 67, C minor
What do Uniform Titles Look Like?
…for non-distinctive, or generic titles, like symphonies, sonatas, or quartets?
…for distinctive titles like Daphnis et Chloé or Appalachian Spring?
Uniform Titlesfor Non-Distinctive,
Generic Titles
…consist of 4 major parts
1. Form of composition
name of a type or form of composition, usually in the plural
examples:– symphonies– sonatas– quartets– suites– concertos
2. Medium of performance
what instruments, groups of instruments or voices are involved
examples:– piano– violin– orchestra– instrumental ensemble– chorus
3. Numeric identifying elements
serial numbers, opus numbers or thematic catalogue numbers
examples:– no. 5– op. 23– K. 550– BWV 1044
4. Key & other info
examples:– B ♭ major– arr. (an arrangment for

other info
Uniform titles for distinctive titles
…like Turandot, Messiah, Appalachian Spring
Only 2 things to remember:
they’ll be in the original language they’ll have no initial articles (the, a, an, le, la, etc.)
Examples of uniform titles for distinctive titles
Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite”
Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun”
Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain”
Shchelkunchik Suite
Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
Noch’ na Lysoĭ gore (1867)
Important -- don’t panic! There’s a trick for finding this stuff out. All will be revealed…
…so now how do I find music in MORRIS?
Tips, Tricks & Little-Known Strategies
Author/Title Keyword Searching
usually the easiest way to find a specific work by a composer
Keyword Search Tip: Choosing keywords
use just a few key words and phrases from your musical work, e.g.
Canon in D for 3 violins and continuo,
by Johannes Pachelbel
Author/Title Keyword = pachelbel and canon
Keyword Search Tip
use “quotation marks” to indicate a phrase– keeps words together, e.g.
“magic flute”
Finding a uniform title you don’t know
1. do an Author/Title Keyword search: mozart and “magic flute”
2. look for the uniform title; it might be here:
Finding a uniform title you don’t know
…or it might be here:
Finding a uniform title you don’t know
3. now you can do a new Author/Title Keyword search:
mozart and zauberflote
…and you’ll get most, or all of them instead of just the ones that happened to have the title in English
MORRIS search tools: Limiting
to narrow your searchMORRIS limits:
– format, e.g. CD, record, cassette, score– location, e.g. Mills, Thode, Innis– language, e.g. English, French, German
How to limit before you search: go to theAdvanced Search screen
Put in some search terms & choose limits
How to limit after you’ve searched: choose a limit from the drop-down menu
Keyword Search Tip
use the truncation symbol * – also called “wild card”
retrieves your search word with different endings, e.g.
symphon* retrieves symphonysymphoniesymphoniessymphonien, etc.
Truncation search example
Author/Title Keyword search:
beethoven and symphon* and 5
Combining Terms: OR
broadens your search use for synonyms, alternate spellings,
abbreviations, etc. always enclose your “or” words in parentheses:
mozart and (“magic flute” or zauberflote)
Author Searching
to see a list of everything by a composer, performer, or author, for example:
Author = purcell henry scroll down to see titles of works listed in
alphabetical order
names of the musical works
number of items for each one
Advanced Searching lets you…
search within specific fields apply limits in advance
Advanced Search example 1
…to get all the Dover editions of Beethoven symphonies
Advanced Search example 2
…to get all the CDs of Wynton Marsalis playing jazz
What if you don’t have a title, just a topic?
