Traveler’s Guide: Riverside, California
Riverside is the birthplace of the California Citrus Industry. It all began in 1873, when the US Department of Agriculture sent over three small Brazilian navel orange trees to Riverside resident Eliza Tibbets, and American settler and founder of Riverside. Due to the dependable year-round sunshine and rich soil, those trees grew quickly and produced sweet and flavorful fruit. By 1882, more than half of the citrus trees in California were located in Riverside. By 1895, Riverside was the wealthiest city per capita in the United States due to the abundant citrus crops.
Housing Resources With so many housing arrangements to consider, searching for a safe environment is key. The hotel, apartment and internet suggestions have been utilized by our RNs and Vendors numerous times. These locations are known to be in safe areas and offer an easy commute
Internet Searching When scouring the internet, please do not be fooled by embellished advertisements that tout low starting rents. Ideally, work with websites where you can interact directly with the owner or landlord in advance. Most are free and some offer membership plans. A few recommended Online portals are:
www.furnishedfinder.com www.airbnb.com
www.vrbo.com
Tip: Search with relevant key
words, “corporate housing”, and “short term rental”, “vacation rental,” and “corporate hotel” as examples. As these words will be necessary to find the information you are looking for, surround them with quotation marks so the search engine knows to look for the specific words in the order you typed.

Riverside is home to a number of historic landmarks and special attractions, ranging from the lovely Mission Inn to oldest navel orange tree in California!
The Mission Inn www.missioninn.com The Mission Inn’s history began in the late 1800’s when Riverside was considered the richest city per capita in the United States due to the profitable citrus industry. The Mission Inn incorporates different structural elements of the 21 California Missions. Over the years, The Mission Inn has hosted numerous celebrities and dignitaries. The Presidential Lounge pays homage to 10 US Presidents who have passed through its doors.
The oldest bell in the world dated in Christendom, A.D. 1247 is showcased right outside the Mission Inn Restaurant.
Riverside Fox Theatre www.venue.riversidepac.com Built in 1929, this theater is the centerpiece of Riverside’s Arts and Culture. The first showing of the 1939 film Gone with the Wind took place here.
During World War II, the building served as a makeshift dormitory after the soldiers from the nearby military bases filled the city's available sleeping spaces. Manager Roy Hunt allowed the soldiers to sleep on the thick carpets of the lobby and auditorium.
California Citrus State Park http://www.citrusstatepark.org Today, the state of California’s citrus history is preserved at the 300-acre California Citrus State Historic Park, which is one of Riverside’s most popular attractions and California’s only park dedicated to the Citrus industry.
Check out the Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree. It’s located in the City Park, SW corner of Magnolia and Arlington Streets]. This is the last of the two original navel orange trees in California!
