Part-time and Summer Job

Under the existing immigration regulations, full-time full-degree non-localstudentsareallowedtoworkatthedesignatedoperatorsontheHKUcampusfor up to 20 hours per week during term time. Whilesomestudentscanearnextramoneyfrompart-timeandvacationwork,availabilityofsuitable jobs isnotguaranteed. It isnotadvisabletoplanyourbudgetexpectingtofindworkforthemaximumallowablehours.

Banking Arrangements: Making early provision

Ifyoudonothaveabankaccount inHongKong, you will need to transfer money foruseonarrival.Thiscanbedone,either

• by instructing an overseas bank one ortwoweekspriortoyourdeparture.Arrangeto sendmoney in your name to a bank inHong Kong (both HSBC and the Bankof East Asia have branches on the HKUcampus);or

Themajorityofbanksareopenfrom9:00a.m.to4:30p.m.,MondaystoFridays.Mostestablishments inHongKongacceptmajorcredit cardssuch as VISA, MasterCard andAmerican Express but the Universityandmostcampusoutletsacceptcashorchequeonly.

Bringing money

There are usually significant extra expenses in the first month of yourstay, such as rental charges, household items and textbooks.On top ofthe tuition fees, the firstmonth’sexpensescanamount toHK$10,000ormoreforastudent.Itisimportanttohavearealisticideaoftheamountofmoneyyouwillneedandplanaccordingly.

Youareadvisedtobringenoughcash,traveller’scheques,orbankdraftstocoverexpensesofatleastyourfirstmonth.Donot,however,carrytoomuchcashatanytime.

Youwill be able to locate banks and currency exchange services at theairportaswellasoncampus.

YoucanobtainabankdraftortransfermoneytoabankaccountinHongKongthroughyourlocalbank.Keepinmindthatitmaytakesometimetocashalargebankdraft.
