H. C. Robbins Landon has described symphony 48 as a "great and indeedgerminal work." It was one of the very few Haydn symphonies of this periodto survive throughout the nineteenth century in various editions.
The innovation in scoring in symphony 38 expands upon an earlier commonbaroque practice of cadential phrase-repetition.

Joseph Haydn was born into an age of inventions and newideas, and through his own creativity became the first greatmaster of the “classical” style. In the late 1750s he begancomposing symphonies, and by 1761 he had composed atriptych (Morning, Noon, and Evening) solidly in thecontemporary mode.Haydn spent much of his career, from 1761 onwards, as a courtmusician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their remoteestate. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from
other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to becomeoriginal". As vice-Kapellmeister and later Kapellmeister, his output expanded: hecomposed over forty symphonies in the 1760s alone. While his fame grew, as hisorchestra expanded, his compositions were copied and disseminated, and his musiccirculated widely, so for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer inEurope. Haydn reached a place in music that set him above all other composers exceptperhaps the Baroque era's George Frideric Handel. Haydn took existing ideas, andradically altered how they functioned. His contributions to musical form have earnedhim the titles "father of the symphony" and "father of the string quartet".While some scholars suggest that Haydn was overshadowed by Mozart and Beethoven,it would be difficult to overstate Haydn's centrality to the new style, and therefore tothe future of Western music as a whole.

Bridgnorth is a hill-town, a rarity in England. It stands high above theriver Severn, its High Town and Low Town connected by a funicularrailway. The skyline is dramatically broken by the two church towers ofSt Leonard rebuilt in 1862, and St Mary Magdalene, the parish church, where the English Haydn Festival is held.
The old market town has a wealth of beautiful, interesting and historicbuildings; the Castle boasts a leaning tower, just as Cromwell left it.Bridgnorth is the northern terminus of the celebrated Severn Valley SteamRailway.
Beyond Bridgnorth lies all the beauty, the wild country and the literaryand historic fascination of Shropshire, at its very best in late spring.
The Revd. Preb. Simon Cawdell is warmly thanked for making the useof St Mary’s Church available to the Festival.
